Maybe it's a bit early but I'm usually able to find some by now. It's usually a steal too price-wise. Anyone seen it around?
If anything, you're too late. It's been available for ~6 weeks, but I haven't heard of any sightings outside of NY.
I hope that you are able to track down some Genny Bock. That beer is not distributed in my area (SEPA). I was in Lake Placid NY a week or so back and picked up a twelve pack at a Rite Aid for 7 bucks. What a deal!! I never had Genny Bock before and I really enjoyed drinking it. I recognize that there is no official beer style of American Bock Beer (BA doesn’t list it) but IMHO Genny Bock is the best American Bock Beer. And it definitely wins the ‘bang for the buck’ award. I really wish that this beer was produced in greater levels and more widely distributed. Cheers!
So, it's been confirmed that it definitely isn't coming to SEPA this year? I've gotten cases each year from when I first heard about in 2009 until 2012. I talked to a distributor in January who said they would call me when it came and still haven't heard squat. I got it from them last year in January. In previous years, it was late Feb, possibly early March.
All I can tell you is that I had a conversation with a beer guy at my local retail beer distributor (Kunda) and he told me that they would not be receiving it. I interpreted that as though it wasn't coming to SEPA but it is possible that it is just a Kunda thing. Please post if you ever obtain this beer. Cheers!
OK, gotcha. I swear, if I find it while I'm out here in NoCal and it's not in SEPA, or at least NJ, Imma flip!!!
Yes, I did and proudly too! Now, I did emphasize that it was in the context of a beer style I termed American Bock Beer. And I also mentioned: “picked up a twelve pack at a Rite Aid for 7 bucks. What a deal!!” To put a finer point on the discussion I did not claim (and I do not claim) that Genny Bock is a craft beer. It is an American Bock Beer. So IMHO, Genny Bock is indeed the “best American Bock Beer”. I never used the word “good” in my previous post but I am prepared to state that Genny Bock is indeed “good” within the context of it being an American Bock Beer (that costs 7 bucks for a twelve pack). I personally do not write beer reviews but the below beer review is consistent with my take on this beer: “The beer pours a nice dark amber color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a solid pilsner and crystal malt scent along with a dry lager yeast aroma. The taste is decent. It has a crisp lager feel with just enough caramel sweetness to add some complexity. It's not overly complex, but it goes down smooth and finishes dry with a balanced bitterness. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with good carbonation. This is a pretty good bock. Like I said, it's not the most complex and interesting beer on the market, but it's smooth and easy drinking.” If you are only interested in drinking fancy craft beer than you should indeed avoid Genny Bock. Cheers!
I posted the below in a previous thread: So, permit me to tell a story. I was recently in Lake Placid, NY with my wife and a bunch of friends cross country skiing. My wife and I stopped at a Rite Aid to pick up some stuff. In the Rite Aid there is a beer in multiple refrigerators. While my wife pick up the needed items I briskly went to see what beer was available (the supply of homebrewed beers I brought was getting low). I spied a twelve pack of Genny Bock beer (in cans). My wife sees me take it out and immediately asked: “Why are you buying that?’ What she was really asking was: Why are you buying that crap?” I replied: “I want to try it”. She asked me several more times over the course of 2-3 minutes: “Why are you buying that (crap)?” I was actually getting a little bit irritated. I paid $6.99 for twelve beers; what a deal!! So, we went back to the house we rented. I changed into my swim trunks and took my twelve pack to the hot tub. Now, I will readily admit that Genny Bock is not a craft beer but it sure was an enjoyable beer to drink while soaking in the hot tub after an exhausting day of cross country skiing (in 7°F conditions). I would guess that Genny Bock is ‘similar’ to Oettinger in that there is nothing exceptional about the beer but it is by no means “bad”. I would go so far as to say that if somebody is exhausted from cross country skiing and soaking in a hot tub that Genny Bock is the perfect beer for that exact situation. Cheers! P.S. Several other of the people in the hot tub tried the Genny Bock and they enjoyed drinking it. My wife did not drink a single Genny Bock (she only drank my homebrewed beers). My wife is such a beer snob!
You wife stopped by MY hot tub, where I was drinking one $6.99 bottle of something good... But in all seriousness, having grown up in upstate NY and sometimes making it back to visit, i'm well aware of the lack of good beer in some parts!
There's a stack of about 8 cases of 12-pk cans sitting on the floor at Joe Canal's Lawrenceville (under $15 IIRC) so at least one of the NJ Genesee distributors received them this year. (Not sure which Genesee distributor that is for Mercer county, however).
