    Good morning spring-forward fermentable freaks,

Mid-MI snow should all but melt away after our forecasted occasional rain showers pass through. This sits well with me as I'm very much ready to store the goose down and snow boots and break out my Moto Guzzi and riding boots. But we all know Mother Nature's got one more up her sleeve, just when we get all giddy.

Short's Brewing took over 17 taps at Crunchy's (MSU campus bar) last Wed. This I was NOT going to miss. Even though I only had a couple hours, all my pours were 8-10 oz. Of course I had to get the bourbon Huma, which always pleases. Next, the vanilla porter, really was the best rendition of this style I've ever had. My fav of the event was their English Mild (Earl of Brixom) stole the show, for me at least. It was only 4% and the flavor was rich, roasty, with a nice coffee bitterness in the finish. Truly a renaissance beer that's long over due.

My wife and I took a quick afternoon jaunt to Grand Rapids Friday to enjoy a wee bit of business & pleasure. I had a quick meeting with a future wedding DJ client at HopCat, and after that, my wife and I enjoyed an awesome HopCat 'Damn Good Fish Sandwich' along with excellent draft beers. Short's (just can't get enough) blew it out of the park with their Stroker Ace (4%) IPA. One can never go wrong with the house brewed Hefeweissen (I know I'm slaughtering the spelling on this) Zugspeit. Our waitress, Katie (top notch!), was kind enough to fetch me some samples of a RIPA from Arbor Brewing (very Nice) and a vanilla bourbon Belgian ale collab with Brewery Vivant (decadent for sure). The local Perrin Brewing's Strong Pale Ale couldn't/shouldn't be passed-up, and I didn't either. After this, a really quick shoot over to Founder's provided a beautiful Red's Rye and a FRESH Rubaeus. No wonder Grand Rapids sees half of my disposable income invested here.

Today has our children's volleyball-basketball tournaments in store. This is why my post in SO DAMNED EARLY. I don't know if a new beer will be had by me today, as time will be short (no pun intended) and the kids take center stage. But..., ya never know. I do have a couple new beers out in the garage fridge that I've been neglecting for a couple weeks now. As for you all, please give us a good review, some colorful commentary, a link to your formal review, and maybe even a pic of your new beer/s - AFTER you've enjoyed them. Thanks for participating in this forum today and for keeping it fun, fresh and informative. Good day and good drinkin'!

In the undying spirit of good beer,

    malty

Greetings NBS faithful! Seems to be a little slow here but maybe folks are recovering from the "spring forward". Weather in Central OH is warmish and cloudy. Good to toss the kids outside and let them blow off some steam.

Had 2 "semi-misses" from Jackie O's this week. I think my expectations were just a little too high on this one. It was good but not great.

Hope you all are having a great day!

    Peace, love, and malty-ness,

Greetings to malty, and BA. Especially to Matt. Blessings to you and yours, brother. Having a Boulevard Nutcracker, for what I believe is the first time. Poured into a 10 oz. Pilsner glass, this winter warmer has a dark, reddish brown color with a 2 inch head that refuses to dissipate, no matter how hard I try to eliminate it. Taste is comforting on a cold, grey central OK day, with a good balance of malt and hops. Smells pretty much like it tastes. I pick up a slight fruitiness, but can not quite identify what it is. A sweet, yet bitter fruit. And a tiny hint of tobacco, but in a good way, not like last night's Marlboro snipe. Bought as a single, will no doubt get a six pack at a later date.

Dragons milk. Found it at my local shop.

Reminds me of a boiler maker I had in my youth. I like the smoothness of the heavy taste and frankly the power of it.

Bought a four pack but will switch to something later.

    NEW BIERE DE MARS SUNDAY

Good afternoon NBSers. It's partly sunny and pushing 60 degrees here in Lancaster County. I just spent 5 very satisfying hours working in the yard. I got the compost turned into the vegetable garden, the flower beds cleaned up, and a few things pruned back. I actually worked up a pretty good sweat for mid March. So I thought a nice tart, wine barrel aged biere de mars would hit the spot.

I was wrong, but all is not lost. I think this and a nice pomegranate balsamic vinegar will make a wonderful reduction for our bockwurst tomorrow night. Cheers and happy sunday everyone!

    Chello, all.

Pre-spring weather here on LI, some smattering of snow remains from a few days ago. Blue skies and sunshine otherwise on this temperate day. Had my first ever Enjoy By from Stone yesterday - it never stood a chance of making it to today, never mind the 04.01.13 date on the bottle - lol. Super high-quality drinking there.

Today is New Russian Imperial Stout Sunday, featuring Dark Horse Brewing's Plead the 5th.

Nice, rich, smooth-tasting RIS - I'd put it somewhere like an Old Rasputin or a Stone Imperial Russian Stout (why do they have to change the order of the words?) in taste - not better than either of them, mind you, but good; on the sweet side, with a big bitter bark up front.

A little weary - maybe that hour makes a difference (I hate the clock-changing crap) - so that's a wrap for me for today, new beer-wise.

Hope y'all have a good 'un.
    Cheers!

New American Saison Sunday (week 420)

Greetings NBS'ers, beauty day here on the ridge in Mid Hud Val NY. 7th straight day of work for me, making hay while sun is shining. Some low mileage weeks, and low budget ones too, on the horizon. What better to cure the aches and pains, physical and mental, than a great beer? This ain't it. Had high hopes, in fact this one was lost before cellar intiative recently. Shoulda stayed. Hope you have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

    eh, not bad saison

    New American IPA Sunday

    Greetings NBSer's,

I'm trying to slog through these miserable weekends in this most miserable of months. Cloudy and cool here in SCMN and damp after a weekend of over 1 inch of rain that offered no relief for the water starved soil as it's too frozen to adsorb the moisture. Just overall yuk. Too cold and too much snow to get anything done. So, I distract myself with the high school state tournaments, boys hockey just finished, and final 4 stuff.

Here's another distraction. Going local today with a brewery that others have found more enjoyable than I. I struggle with the newbies charging more for their products than I think they've earned the right to expect, but I suppose I'm not the one investing and expecting to cover expenses, so sometimes I shut the hell up, fork over the money and give these new products a try. This one turned out more favorable than many. Nice solid IPA with strong citrus aroma. Bitterness leans more harsh than smooth, but it won't stop me from partaking. Named after a Minnesotan colloquialism.

Greetings fellow NBSers! After a couple of sunny and warm days, the Fourth Corner is back to it's usual gray self, although the temps are comfortably near 50. I went with some friends out to North Fork Brewery, Pizzeria, Beer Shrine and Wedding Chapel yesterday. Great brews, great pizza and the brewer, Eric sat with us, and shared a homebrewed version of NF's pale, aged with Brett. Soo good! He also gave each of us a 750 of another homebrew, NF's Son of Frog barleywine, also on Brett. Looking forward to that!

After that, I did my monthly security gig at the local roller derby bout, then went out and saw a couple of good bands. It was a good day, I didn't have to use my AK. Later this afternoon I'm heading over to my friend Justin's (BA OKComputer) for a tasting/bottle share. Since I keep my "cellar" in his actual cellar, there will be tasty goodness ahead. I'm watching NASCAR at one of my locals and ticking off a couple of new brews, starting with this average-ish Brown ale from one of WA's newer breweries: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30589/91062

    Greetings NBS'ers!

We're actually getting some sun today outside of Boston. March appropriate weather - upper 30s. The 8" of snow we got on Friday is leaving quickly, thankfully. A welcome respite after a week of clouds and surprisingly bad storm. That will now be followed by a week of clouds and rain.

Enjoying a Victory Swing Session Saison.

A solid beer for the price. I'll definitely be buying more of it. Now it's time to get started on some chili.

Happy Sunday, All. Enjoy the coming week.

    Awesome weekend in West MI.

Laughfest has turned G-Rap into a multi-venue comedy club. My wife and I met friends at Graydon's Crossing before the Joel McHale show last night. That meant Shepard's Pie, Cask Two Hearted, and a sample of Barrel Aged Old Rasputin.

Temps are in the mid-40s with gray skies and spots of rain. Perfect to get in a recovery run, wrap up some errands, and drink a new beer.

It's my first from Cheboygen. Not bad at all.

    NEW RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUT SUNDAY
    Greetings, fellow NBSers,
It's currently 43 degrees and a bright gray in Spokane. I've spent the weekend luxuriating in the relief of not having to go out of town for the first weekend in nearly a month (actually I've been mostly cleaning, but also catching up on movies and TV and listening on the radio to local college basketball)
Today I went with a RIS from Nevada:
    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/18990/47576/?ba=woemad
Considering the bad experience I'd had with the same brewery's IIPA and the middling scores this beer has so far attracted, I was happily surprised.

Happy Famhouse Ale NBS to Everyone!

What a great day here at THE Jersey Shore! A great weekend in fact. Sunshine, warming temps in the 50s, and a bright outlook toward Spring. Mother Nature allowed me to get a lot of work done yesterday around the outside of the house, taking care of the 'after the winter storms' maintenance. Fence mending, shutter replacement, and general picking up the pieces of a long winter. So today it was relaxation, a visit to the driving range, and long a power walk with my wife.
All that can only mean that it's time to get to the beer: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28742/80585/?ba=NiceTaps.

Oh, and my wife likes it, too.

    Cheers, everyone. Enjoy!

It' a rainy, yet mild day here in Chicago. At least the rain is getting rid of all if the snow. I'm making pizzas with the nephew and the rest of the family. I'm trying New Hollsnd's The Poet Oatmeal Stout for the first time. The family's opinion seems to be that it's a nice, easy to drink stout. Can't say I disagree.

    Happy Sunday to everyone!

    >>>>>> New Wit Sunday <<<<<<

Pike Dry Wit to be exact. I have had this one in the DFB for a while, waiting for a spring seasonal day to go along with the spring seasonal beer. Another solid offering from the folks at Pike.

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/365/58027/?ba=RJLarse

I still have yet toe visit the Pike Brewpub in Seattle. It's getting to the point of having to put that place on my bucket list.

Not the greatest of daylight savings time days today. Yesterday was fantastic, but today cloudy with a passing afternoon rain shower. Now as I think about starting the grill, we are getting some filtered sunshine from the west.

Fickle weather. A sure sign of spring.

    Happy Trails!
