It is a collab between Cavern Tavern and South Mountain Brewing that is available only for us and friends to drink. Latest batch we did half with coffee, the other half with Evan Williams bourbon added.

Obsidian is awesome. So is Lost Coast 8 Ball Stout.

Here's some love: it's on my all time top five beers list. It is probably my favorite stout I've had and I buy plenty of it, but I'll keep searching dilligently for one that's better.

(it's what's creating that nice head in my profile pic.)

Obsidian is hands down my favorite American stout. Mad River Steelhead Extra Stout is a close second for me.

Haven't had Obsidian in a couple of years, better go and try it again sometime. I do agree with the above statement that Mad River is really good too.

    Russian imperial stout...

    I'm talking american stout.

As I recall, you just said no barrel aging, coffee, or vanilla beans. Old Rasputin is a regular (barley and hops) stout... Just a bit bigger than the typical american stout.

But I can play along, I was a huge fan of Goose Island's Oatmeal Stout. But, unfortunately, it was discontinued within a year of me first tasting it. Now, I'd have to go with Sam Adams' Cream Stout.

I know that those both aren't "american stouts", but that's what I got.

When I said single stout, I meant "american stout", just like a pale, not an ipa or double ipa. That would be like me saying Zombie Dust is the best single Pale Ale and someone said "Pliny is better", technically it is still a "pale" i suppose.

And I can never seem to find Sam Adam's cream stout.

Velvet Merlin is also pretty great. Same with Sierra Nevada Stout.

While I like Obsidian Stout, I never buy it. Anytime I want a nice dark beer and I think Deschutes, I go Black Butte Porter.

Left Hand Milk Stout's probably my go 'single' stout.

I guess I should given it another try, I didn't note it as exceptional when I tried it, but maybe I was having an off day.

Being an East Coaster, I've never had it. But if someone wants to trade w/ a guy with a bunch of MD locals, please BM me.

Obsidian Stout is a pretty awesome brew. Wish we had it here in Utah.

    Cheers!

Love Obsidian, it was my 'go to' on the West Coast. Now living in New England I have fallen for Ipswich Oatmeal Stout and, side-by-side, the Ipswich wins every time. I am happy to have a great, widely available stout available no matter where I am living now.
