DFH 60 min, way more malt forward than 90 min in my opinion.

Oskar Blues G'Knight, while a self-proclaimed Imperial Red, is listed on this site as a DIPA, and it's amongst the most balanced hoppy brews I've had. Big caramel notes. Hops have some nice juiciness. Not much bitterness at all; maybe a touch in the aftertaste.

All great suggestions, that's what I love about BA! Another one that I would say is Sculpin, if you can get up there in Jersey, if not 2 Hearted is the goods!

Exactly this. They are pricey but oh so deliciously malty, balanced, smooth, drinkable, fantabulous, etc etc.

Sucks is a fantastic DIPA for the uninitiated (and less expensive than the DFH) and Racer 5 is balanced and, dare I say, somewhat mild on the palate.

You must have had an old bottle. Fresh 60 vs. fresh 90 the 90 is a malt monster. It has more hops infused to be sure, but its down right chewy. I love 90 min, not so much the 60min.

I think Union Jack does that perfectly with huge amounts of drinkability.

Coranado's Idiot Ipa is getting zero exposure it seems. A west coast version of DFH 90min. Pretty damned good, especially for Coranado.

Just go for a DIPA. As they tend to be more balanced and have a ton of malt backbone.

Have you tried any of the black IPAs? They usually have more malt and less grapefruit. BA lists them as American Black Ale.

Some of my favorites have been mentioned, though technically I don't think of them as IPAs-

Dogfish Head Burton Baton (a takeoff of the 'Burton' style, as the name suggests, sort of a pre-IPA)

Lagunitas Maximus (my brain processes it as an American Strong Ale, due to the big flavor contributions from the malts)

Both are freakin' awesome, whatever you call them. Burton Baton is more spicy/resiny and has a unique subtle wood character. Maximus is fresh, fruity and juicy, but a bit mellow at the same time- kind of like if you grilled a slice of pineapple.

Those are definitely big beers, though. For something in a more 'normal' range I'd go with the aforementioned Goose Island IPA or even Southern Tier IPA- both have a really nice hop presence but don't go to extremes with it.

Great Divide Rumble. Big hops, but they're balanced with a nice oak and caramel character. Love that beer so much.

Came here to say that, to me it has the same sort of tropical, citrusy hops as sucks with a bigger balanced malt background. Also Lagunitas IPA is one of the more balanced sessionable IPAs out there.

I think Tallgrass IPA is a solid one that fits what you've described.

Yeah, I think that all of Lagunitas IPAs have a nice residual sweetness that balances the hops well. Especially Maximus.

When you make statements referring to Pliny the Elder as "extremely balanced", it makes it difficult to answer your question. It is not balanced. It is the very archetype of the west coast style IIPA. Perhaps you had an aged sample. If you actually want a more balanced example, try something like DFH 90.

I probably did have an aged sample. That's why it confused the crap out of me that a DIPA from the west coast (which I know tend to have more of a "grapefruity", bitter taste) was THAT balanced. I think I'm gonna start with the DFH 90 and then go from there.

In my opinion the IPAs which have the most balance (the malt backbone is comparable in ‘intensity’ to the hoppiness) are Victory HopDevil and Southampton Burton IPA.

    Cheers!

P.S. Sam Adams Latitude 48 is also pretty balanced.
