90 minute fo sho, that stuff is crazy balanced, I don't get it very often due to me actually wanting to have my palate destroyed most of the time :grinning:

all this talk makes me wish I'd had the Dogfish Head 90 Min. on tap last weekend. dammit!

am i being a stoopid newbie by suggesting the English pale ale for some good malt? I know I am because you don't get even half the hop bite of an American IPA/DIPA, but Samuel Smith's, Fuller's, Young's ... and others ... there's good malt in there.

I'd go Dogfish 90 or Sierra Nevada Torpedo. I too am a fan of the malt-balanced IPA's and DIPA's. The pineapple and grapefruity stuff...ehhh...

Torpedo is next up for me. Can't get Dogfish 90 in Bryan-College Station.

I'm drinking a Stone Enjoy By right now, and I love the grapefruit/citrus/hop explosion, BUT ... it can be overbearing. I love it, but I also will be balancing it out later during my "weekend" with a Chimay Red or a delving into stout.

... and to stick on point: I love the thread. How can I get some great hops AND some great malt? Balance can be so wonderful.

If your talking malty, you have to go with Brewdog's Hardcore IPA
If your talking balanced, besides Pliny, Hop Ottin from Anderson Valley is what does it for me.
Love Torpedo but its definitely HOP forward!

If you can find it, Great Divide Hercules is exactly what you're looking for..... big, malty, balanced double IPA

Caldera IPA and Green flash's west cost IPA are pretty well balanced. Idk if It's my taste buds or the brews that have changed , but it seems they are both less Hop-forward than they used to be, I pick up a lot more of the maltiness in them.

If you want something both markedly malty and nicely hoppy, you might consider looking into some Imperial Reds as well. Oskar Blues G'Knight's been mentioned (quite aptly). Others I've liked are Cambridge Red God and Lagunitas Imperial Red... though the Cambridge may not be available where you are and Lagunitas didn't make the Imperial Red this year... so... never mind.

My findings that if you aren't a big fan of IPAs the IRAs are the next logical move. I find many pale ales just lacking the body of what I am looking for. Great Summer beers though just in a pub I like something slightly more flavorful. Right now there seems to be a trend to mix IPAs and IRAs in the small batches at some of my favorite haunts here in Bend.

Troegs nugget nectar, or you could consider some of the black ipa's that are coming out. They are interesting. Dogfish Indian Brown Ale is a unique and balanced beer as well.

Totally agree with OB's G'Night, tons of caramel/malty flavor to balance the hoppiness of this one. A great beer, with a great story behind it that's worth Googling, this one has become a favorite of mine.

I just tried Two Hearted for the first time; loved it and found it to be pretty balanced as well.
