I've read many erudite and wonderful historical explanations on this and many other forums on what the difference is between a Porter and a Stout.
The more intelligent ones appear to all lead to the same conclusion. There may have been good line to make the distinction once.
    No longer.
We've muddied the waters. There is no line, there aren't even signs or dividing lines (thank you Grateful Dead).
So screw it, make a name that covers the spectrum and call them all by it.
I like Pout for simplicity. Unfortunately, wrong impression. The good ones make me grin.
    Stouter?
    You go.

Hybrid-Pouter. I'd drink an imperial Pouter.

The names are fine; we just have to recognize that the distinction between them is pretty much arbitrary. Then we can just drink beer and not worry about it.

I'll give you the Grateful Dead as maybe over the line. But, can you in 50 words or less define the essential differences between a Porter and a Stout? Will more than 10 people agree with you?
Don't post your definition here, there are plenty of those threads already (all inconclusive). You can email me and I'll do something important with it.
But really, this is just for fun.

Porter's more brownish, stout's more blackish.

I like where your head's at OP.

For a site that revolves around beer, there aren't nearly enough drunken monologues.

Personally, I'm not into hybridizing words... it seems lazy. I think it should be your job to come up with an entirely new and original name for this new classification. It's your time to shine.

(BM me if you need suggestions though; I think "bangarang" would be a pretty cool name.)

I can dig that. I like the whole idea of coming up with something unique and not just a mix of the words stout and porter.

Hey look it's this thread again! Lemme just get out my Ray Daniels book for reference. I am ready to get bashed by all of you historians out there, but I don't give a shit.

I am completely confident in the differences between a porter and stout, because I have had numerous examples. Flavor wise: Porters have much more milk chocolate with caramel, toffee, and light roast. Stouts have a high roast and lightly charred flavor with coffee. These two profiles are completely relevant to almost all in the styles I have had. Lets look at the stylistic winning profile for the styles now, per Ray Daniels book:

    Top grains:

    Robust Porters:
Crystal (usually a large portion of the grains by %)
    Chocolate
    Black Patent

    Stouts:
    Roasted/Black Barley
    Crystal
    Chocolate
(majority use roasted barley as the main grain according to the % too)

I rest my case, but noone will care anyways.
