I have 32 days of paid vacation every year plus all the national holidays and Fridays (all 52 of them) are only half days which means I go in at 8 amd punch out again at 12.

Considering their (miniscule) size that's 5 real 0.5 Liter beers per person which is completely normal for a night. My wife and I were out saturday night and she had 8 just by herself... I had more.

Edit: So they are quarter liters but with 4 people my above calculation is still almost accurate.

And that's far more beer I'd choose to put into my (rather healthy) middle-aged body in one sitting. Sowed my wild oats long ago, more into savoring than slamming these days.

"Slamming" would mean drinking fast to get drunk. Neither of us was "drunk" in a sense that we were falling around. Obviously neither of us was fit to drive anymore but there's a difference if you drink 8 4.8 % Plank or 8 units of some IIIIIPA or some other superheavy sceensterbrew. I would've likely puked after 3 of the later...

OK, so my photos suck, but at least they pair well with my sucky reviews. Here goes:

Füchschen Alt. 500 ml bottle. Bottled on 26.02.13, best before 02.04.13 (Euro-style dating). Consumed on St. Patty's Day, which in Germany is known as March 17th. This was the first "proper" (i.e. Düsseldorfer) Alt I ever had, back in January of 2012 when I went up to Düsseldorf on a lark. I've been in love with this hard-to-find style ever since. It has been over a year, and this is my first chance to revisit Brauerei im Füchschen's take on the style.

Look is true to style, a healthy pour into a footed pilsner glass yields a beautiful clear copper beer with a fluffy white head. Tastes....almost slightly chalky? A taste one has to get used to, which usually happens around sip number two or three. By the end of the glass I was sad that I promised the second bottle to die Frau. Definitely a beer I will miss when I eventually move back Stateside, and a reminder that I need to get back to Düsseldorf one of these days.

Overall: A standard bearer for Alts. 4/5

Maybe we can make a BA meeting there some time? At least to do a pub crawl in D-dorf. My fav. is still Schlüssel Alt, with zum Uerige, zum Füchsen and Schumacher fighting for second.

I'm not opposed but it would take a lot of planning for me as I am a stay at home Dad to an 18 month old.

The biggest problem with the 18 month old is that he won't sit still in a restaurant. After about 10 minutes in the Kinderstuhl he wants nothing more than to run around and explore. I probably wouldn't even finish my first beer and introductions with you all before I'd have to get up and start chasing. Again, I'm not opposed to the idea, but if I do go up to Düsseldorf to meet up I would like to...you know...talk to you all.

We WILL need some exercise after a few, right? We could take turns helping him harass the wait staff.

I need to start drinking and evaluating the beers Stahlsturm dropped off at my place, for my g/f is breaking into the stash before I get a chance to drink them. She's already downed one while I was working late.

So here goes with the first, Winkler Bräu from Langenfeld: Kupfer Spezial. (She'd already killed half the bottle before I was able to rescue it.) Color is dark red-brown: kupfer means "copper," so it's dark red copper. Aroma is malt, Münchner malt, only with some German hops. Flavor is very very malty, Pilner, Müchner malts, quite sweet, not super sweet, but quite sweet nonetheless. I taste hop bitterness in the back but it's like they used just enough to not allow the sweetness overwhelm. Overall, very balanced, Goldilocks in mouthfeel, not too thick or thin. I like it, especially the sweetness of the malts. I wouldn't travel to drink this beer, but if it were in a supermarket, I'd pick it up often.

I feel your pain. My wife (who is of Irish descent) will drink a beer I poured when I put it down to do something. I will come back to find a half empty (or is it half full?) glass. When I look at her she will respond: somebody left a beer unattended.

Tony, do not leave your beer unattended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Prost!

Forgot to add the prerequisite picture of this beer. Also, it can be ordered on line here at

What one may add about the Winkler is that unfortunately it has taken a somewhat tourist trappy turn in the past decade, possibly owed to it's location right off the Autobahn A 3 at the Velburg exit. Though it hasn't suffered in (beer or drink) quality so far (and I go there frequently to check back) the price range has gone up considerably and is now in the same league as say, the Bischhofshof in Regensburg. Which, compared to the surrounding region is pretty high end with beer prices at 3 EUR a glass. Of course all the Dutch and Danish and whatnot who pass through here on their treck to warmer realms still think it's dirt cheap.

So, should you ever find yourself taking a run down the A 3, by all means, do check the Winkler

I realize that half a liter of beer at 3 EUR is dirt cheap to most but around here that's pretty high. You can drink the best beer in little village pubs for (sometimes) 1.90 still.

Welde Jahrgangsbier 2013 Version: A German attempt at an English style IPA brewed with Argentinian (Mapuche?) hops. 6.7% ABV, corked and caged 750 ml bottle poured into a ~200 ml (guessing) mini dimpled mug. Also shared with friends and die Frau. Friends teased me that I only drink expensive beer now. I failed to mention the three Oettinger's I had a few weeks back, but alas, the moment is now past.

It looks great, even when poured into what appears to be a novelty glass (I was not drinking at home). An amber honey color with a nice head and constant stream of carbonation. Tasted...well...almost dead on. I wasn't sure what was wrong. It was a good beer. I asked everyone's opinion and all agreed that it was tasty. Die Frau made a valid observation, "Yeah, it's good...it's got a little sweetness that I'm not used to." I think that might have been it. The back of the bottle mentions a sweet note that is offset by the bitterness. At the same time it tastes OK but also doesn't quite seem right.

An interesting beer, and one worth trying, however at €8,90 per 750 ml, I don't think I'd buy it again. There is an English novelties store in HD that sometimes has English beers, one that immediately pops to mind is St. Austell's Proper Job which is about €3,00 for a 500 ml bottle if memory serves. For the price of each, I'd lean towards the St. Austell if I were in the mood for an IPA.

A tough beer to judge because I liked it, but couldn't figure out what I felt was missing. Plus I'd like to give Welde points for trying. As I said in another thread, a German beer that proudly displays "with Argentinian hops!" with no mention of the RHG is definitely something. Let's say 3.25/5

Yeah, you can get an entire case of your favourite Oettinger for that price... :stuck_out_tongue:

I'm measuring out the hops for a super hoppy whirlpooled-hops IPA, which I'll brew tomorrow, but while I'm doing that, I need to tuck into Stahlsturm's stash before my g/f drinks more of them. I'm going to have to hide them in the cellar or they'll be all gone before I've got the chance to write them up.

Brauerei Berghammer from Oberndorf has a Kupfer [copper] beer, which says it's unfiltriert and naturtrüb [unfiltered] & [naturally cloudy].
Here's a pic I thought I'd borrow from another blog, The Bitten Bullet, where you can see if my review matches his.

It's a dirty white, vanilla-colored head under a red-brown-orange beer, dark copper. Aroma is all malt, caramel, Münchner of course with a hint of bitterness behind it. The initial flavor is sweet and bitter simultaneously. It's sweetness is a pure roasted barley maltiness around the back and front of the tongue, with a slight sourness added in the back, too. I get bitterness on the front and sides. It's got the same not-too-thick, not-too-thin mouthfeel of the Winkler Kupfer. To tell the truth, I can't distinguish the Winkler from the Berghammer Kupfer. This one is slightly bitterer and leaves a bitter, slightly sour aftertaste. Overall, a really good beer, and again, I wouldn't travel to get it, or order a lot of it online, but if I were in the area, I'd love to try it fresh on tap.
