I agree completely. Lagunitas IPA along with Anderson Valley Hop Ottin are two of the most drinkable IPA's I have come across. Some are more strongly flavored but I can find no others more balanced and just inviting you to have another. I used to love Union Jack but have found recent samples way too orangey in flavor. Racer 5 I won't drink any longer as I find it now bland. I have no idea what has happened to BP, they used to be, to me, a great brewery with a awesome line up of beers. Now all seem to have changed or tweaked for the worse. Is it just me? One of the most flavorful IPA's I have sampled lately is JC Flyer from Iron Springs Brewery in Fairfax Ca. Fantastic. I tried Smuttynose IPA in Brooklyn last year and loved it. I refuse to drink anything made by that clown Calagione so Dogfish Head is right out. Drakes makes a great IPA and of course Russian Rivers IPA's are upper class.

Balance is subjective for sure, but with the exception of Sixpoint Resin, it seems East Coast IPA/DIPA's have bigger malt profiles than West. The Dogfish ones in particular as has been said numerous times.

I'm not entirely sure what your palate is picking up that you like but if you like Pliny you may consider exploring other West Coast IPA's that have lots of late hop additions and less bittering additions. Things like Stone IPA, Ruination, Alesmith IPA, and Lagunita Hop Stoopid come to mind.

If you are truly seeking "balanced" and/or "malty" I'm not sure why you are even sampling IPAs/DIPAs. I would suggest American Pale Ales or American Ambers b/c by definition those will have more malt and be more balanced.

Just making sure I'm understanding what you are looking for b/c you have a lot of worthy suggestions posted depending on your specifics.

The best part is exploring...drink what you like...cheers!!!

Very well said!!! I will add: Just becareful of the ABV. Some of the DIPAs come off really boozy and will overpower the other flavors.

I found uinta's hop notch to be very balanced for an IPA. Boulevard brewings pale ale is also balanced. Odell myrcenary is a great dipa, as well as dry dock brewings dipa.

Bell's Two Hearted has more malt character than hop, IMO.

Not an IPA, per se, but, give SN Bigfoot a shot. The sweetest/hoppiest/maltiest brew I've had to date.

I just had Honkers IPA and thought it was relatively balanced. Although it is very mild.

You'd probably really like nugget nectar. It's sold as an "imperial amber", but it's pretty much a malty DIPA. Maybe Torpedo also...

Yeah, oskar Bues beers for sure are really malty forward. Way too sweet for me, but you will probably like those.

Also Anderson Valley Imperial IPA (and IPA) are really sweet and malty.

I would say also Great Divide Hercules and even Titan IPA.

IMO.......Sam Adams Latitude 48 is a very balanced IPA. Stevens Point Whole Hog IPA is a very malty IPA.

For a different twist, Sam Adams Double Agent IPL from the Spring Thaw Pack isn't bad at all. Pretty good pine and citrus aroma, hops up front, nice malt in the finish. Yeah, its not an ale, but it drinks like one.

One more to add, give Great Divide Titan IPA a shot; certainly worth a try.

I assume you meant Union Jack. If so, I wouldn't call that IPA malty or balanced, it's squarely a West Coast hop bomb.

My suggestions, these are all regular IPAs, not DIPAs.

    DFH 60
Ithaca Flower Power has a huge malt presence
    Victory HopDevil
    Goose Island IPA
    Lost Coast Indica

A solid idea, and if you go that route: Red Chair is real real tasty; slightly hoppier than a lot of pale ales, but certainly a stronger malt balance than most IPAs

You asked about pale ales. If you can get it, try Schlafly Pale Ale. Caramelized malts. They also have a dry-hopped American Pale Ale, which is what you didn't want. Also in their special release is American IPA, lots of hops but smoothed with the caramelized malts.

    Another vote for 90 minute.

And if you want a really unique, balanced, high ABV "DIPA"...Burton Baton (it goes down WAY too fast!).

I would suggest firestone walkers Double Jack DIPA that one Is quite Malty. close to that of a porter/stout I thought.
