I hated beer at the age of 21, but then had a taste of Affligem Dubbel that a friend poured, and it was okay. Then I bought a bottle of Sam Adams Chocolate Bock back when it still came in the limited release 750 ml bottle and it was amazing, i drank the whole bottle on purpose. It was then that my tasted buds tied beer to the collection center in my brain, because I've had several hobbies involving collecting things throughout my 25 years on this planet. I've spent the last three years collecting beer that I want to drink and repeating beers that I found enjoyable. If a beer is good and I have the opportunity to get it again, or I have the opportunity to have it on draft, I go for it, but if it is just okay, I'll turn it down for something new. My ticking is for personal enjoyment and satisfaction, not a competition against society, and every now and then I reach a milestone and have an excuse get friends together and try something BIG. I want to experience so many things, not just beer.

As already mentioned, I think people have different understandings of a "ticker."

My understanding is it's someone who will only purchase beer that they've never had before. Personally, I can't understand that...what's the point of trying to find a brew you like if you're never going to buy it again? But it doesn't bother me...I'm glad people do what makes them happy.

This story is worthless without two pieces of missing information:

    1) What was the year, make and model of the car?

    2) What was the year, brewer and name of the beer ?

Sorry I got distracted by your avatar, but yea this post pretty much sums it up for me. Personally I rarely have the time or funds to be a ticker, I just love enjoying a good beer and often return to ones that I know I love. Could honestly care less about the way others choose consume or purchase beer.

I won't tick from tasters unless I can actually remember them afterwards. Sometimes my palate is so destroyed that any taster I have at a bar after already having had three full beers and a full meal, that I don't *appreciate* what I'm having in the taster. Ticking shouldn't be a contest to have the highest "had" count; that's for sure.

I don't care how other people choose to drink their beer. If you enjoy being an obsessive ticker, then good for you.

I wouldn't consider myself a ticker, but there certainly are beers that are "on my list". I have a stash of my favorites...and that is what I drink the majority of the time, but when I see several people really talk up a beer, I have to try it. It's how I find my new favorite. Don't keep count...but I try to keep track. Don't want to buy a drain pour twice...not that I have ever found a drain pour. Just beers that I don't enjoy as much!

There is nothing wrong with ticking, but so many folks only do it halfway. These folks will probably never reach a high enough total to win the grand prize. And if you don't win the ticker grand prize, then what is the point of it? I mean if you aren't even in the running for the grand prize, what are you half hearted tickers hoping to accomplish? It's like driving in a NASCAR race, and counting the laps, but not having a car fast enough to hope to complete, or win, the race? Perhaps a ticker can explain it.

It's not bad to be a ticker so long as you still enjoy the beer.

Tickers got a bad rep when this site gave karma points for people who would take a sip of a beer and post a review to max their points. Ticking is not bad at all- try new beers!!

Is there something wrong with it? I don't know who is really knocking it. IMHO, as a guy who has a crapton of hobbies, I can imagine there's a point where while dedicatedly ticking you start having stuff that by all rights and opinions looks to be mediocre instead of enjoying something you already know to be great - so, an opportunity cost if you will - but you never know until you try it right? This happens to me all the time with comic books. I've read something like, eh, say 15,000 of the things and I know by now what is and are considered to be the absolute "must haves" and then there tends to be stuff that really does not have that much of a vibe to it. But, sometimes you end up being shocked how much you enjoy a run of comics you paid $40 for out of dollar bins instead of grabbing that $30 volume that you know to be a classic. Of course, sometimes you raid those dollar bins for stuff that would be better off being placed in a recycling bin for your time and $$$ putting together. I personally think I would prefer to be the guy who has tried, like, 2,000 new beers and splurges on getting more of the really good stuff as it comes around than the guy who's pursuing tick number 30,000 and never allows themselves to enjoy a sixer of Hopslam or whatever since they're too busy chasing that next tick. That's just me though, I've always been a middle ground kind of guy.

My favorite thing about beer is trying something new and that there is always something different to try. However, I will NEVER refer to myself as a ticker. Just don't care for the term.

YES YES YES, I completely agree. BTW who says it's bad?? I'm not ticking, I'm not tracking, it's a journey so journey on...anything is bad when you're doing it by or for the numbers. Follow your heart, drink for your soul...

At its root the difference seems to be that some folks enjoy a beer and hope to enjoy it again, and if they are generous, hope to share the experience with others. Some folks find having a large number to represent their hobby makes them happy. Those who make fun of people who get pleasure from creating large numbers in this way do so because to us ticking seems vain and pointless. I can't speak for others, but I often make fun of people who do vain and pointless things.
