That is the reason I loved that beer, I thought the melon flavor was a very unique take on a DIPA. The first bottle I had throught me for a loop with the melon but the by the third I really loved it.

This is why I keep retrying beers I didn't like, I quite often hear the saying that our taste buds change over time. I used to hate coconut and tomatoes, now I like them.

I took the Stone IPA reference as a big 'huh?' as well. I get not liking it for reasons x y and z, but I can't see harsh as being any of them! Harsh with what, I wonder? Curious...

I've haven't had the good fortune to try Enjoy By yet but I have had fresh Rampant. The first few sips were fantastic but then it got very cloying due to the resiny green tea like flavor. The hop character was just too sweet.

Let me explain.. One year ago I was still drinking Miller lite. I was brought into the craft game Via Sierra Nevada pale ale but still not liking the IPAs much. During that initial enlightening I had a Stone ( 8 months ago or so ) IPA. More recently I had a Ruination Stone IPA. All i care about now is IPAs and I am starting to discover other beer types.. More recently I have been brewing my own and now I am in love. Did that help the confusion ?

I enjoy all of the IPAs that your wife enjoys. I drink Stone IPAs every once in a while but can find them overly bitter at times. Sometimes this is what I want. I imagine, rather than the hop and/or malt bill, it may be the hop schedule --- i.e., what types of hops, how much of them, and at what point in the boil that the hops are added --- that is used by Stone that creates an IPA she doesn't like.

Give her Stone and tell her its something else. Enjoy by has 11 hop varieties, so chances are there's a hop in there that she doesn't like

Do your job as a husband and tell her what she likes based on what she's liked in the past. You'll thank me later.

Her loving Sucks but disliking Enjoy By makes no sense whatsoever! Sucks is basically a slightly less refined/complex version of Enjoy By. Don't get me wrong, I love Sucks, but it basically offers an extremely similar but not quite as good aroma and flavor profile to Enjoy By. Of course this is just my opinion, and someone could certainly like Sucks better, but I find it mind boggling that someone could love one and completely dislike the other!

My wife enjoys IPA's also and she runs the gammit and many times surprises me; she enjoys stuff like Ruination, Two Hearted, Pliny, Double Sunshine, Head Hunter, White Rajah, Triple Play, Kryptonite, Sucks, Dreadnaught, Alpine Pure Hoppiness & Expo, but not - Heady Topper, Alchemy Hour, Terrapin Hopzilla, Hop Slam, Harpoon Leviathan Imp IPA, Gubna (hold your comments) and some others. I could go on with her likes and dislikes but I guess my point is, I wouldn't lose sleep over it and the fact that she's digging IPA/Double IPA's is cool. I'm not going to analyze the ingredients (and who wants to take the time to do that, it takes all the fun out of enjoying beer unless you have a wheat allergy), despite the hop variety and when they're added to the boil, it's going to yield a different result. Beer's a journey, take mental or physical notes - don't repeat the dislikes, and enjoy the ride!

My thought was Summit, but that's a possibility as well. OP, get your wife a can of Gubna and see how she likes it. They recently changed the recipe, so it's not 100% Summit hopped anymore, but the onion/garlic presence is still strong.

I don't really see a "problem" here. Just a matter of tastes. Most likely it's the yeast strain that accounts for her dislike of certain brewerys. Just be happy you have a wife that enjoys good beer as much as <I assume> you do:wink:

Too many variables in this equation. You will never put your finger on the answer to this, so enjoy the journey and be thankful you have a companion traveler. You are a lucky man.

I wish my wife liked beer, let alone hops, let alone IPA's and DIPA's.

Right! That helps a good deal. Listen, I can relate this to my experience just a while ago; what I thought was yuck (big bitter beers), turned out to be one of my greater pleasures of middle-aged life. I have a rule in that I will revisit most of dislikes in beer and food every few years or so...you never know when something in your palate changes, and the Bang! And it can change a lot. It would have been a shame to miss all of this (chasing (D)IPA's, I mean).

Ever know someone that is color blind?

Everyone has their own threshold for any compound and can be blind to some tastes. Then there are those that will say Cilantro tastes like soap due to their genetics. That is what the science of human perception has shown to be trure.

If you hadn't judged from my screen name, that response was sarcastic.
