    Bah...

You don't get to talk about the old days or "back then" when it's only 3 years ago. :astonished:

I have recently had the chance to try Short's Imperial Spruce Pilsner and DFH My Antonia Imperial Pilsner. Ok its not a lager, but its not an ale. I enjoyed the DFH, however the Short's Imp. Spruce Pilsner I thought was outstanding. Both were enjoyable, and I am glad I tried got the chance to try them. I am normally an anything IPA or Stout kinda guy, but these were a nice change for a few bottles!

Those sound like some good gateway beers into the more refined world of balanced lagers.

While you may have never had a good imperial lager, that doesn't mean they don't or havent existed. Just because all good lagers aren't imperial, doesn't mean that all imperial lagers aren't good.

To piggyback on the comments above Jack's Abby is putting out some amazing lagers, some in the 8-8.5% range. I'd take a Kiwi Rising or Hey Diddle Diddle over a good number of imperials ales.

I never did get Imperial Pils thing, that's not the deal if your a lover of the style. I prefer Dortmunder Gold as it is right now. Prima Pils is IMO a great brew, I don't want it roided up to 8% abv. As always to each his own, but IMO a simple Pils may be the hardest style to brew and make it great than any other style out there, and I love the simplicity but difficulty in making one great in a sea of average.

In a way though, aren't doppelbocks, maibocks, and eisbocks all "Imperial" lagers?

I remember the 'uncool' among us asking at the time "aren't these just hoppier maibocks, and shouldn't they just fall under that designation?". Couldn't be the next big thing going about it that way, I guess.

I get weak at the knees in the presence of world class pilsner. Too bad it seems relatively rare.
And what's the point of imperial pilsner?
Like a feckin Prius with an inverted V-16 2800 cubic inch Hemi.

In a way, aren't "Imperial" lagers just bocks ? Just another case of re-inventing the wheel.

No, because the only true "imperial" beer is Imperial Stout. All this use of the imperial term is just advertising and marketing pap.
