Were you at the same tasting as the OP? I ask because he did notice a big difference:

"It was surprising how different the 2012 draft versus bottle tasted."

Unless by bottle he meant the 2010. From the way he wrote it, I thought he was comparing the 2012 bottle to the 2012 draft.

As far as knowing which one you're drinking off draft, I imagine it would mention it on the keg tag or that the beer buyer would know and convey that info to the server. As I mentioned, ask and hopefully the bar you're at has a well informed staff.

I tried what the server described to me as the Redline version last Wednesday, and then I tried the Tortuga Saturday, and I thought I noticed a big difference. The Redline was more roasty and coffee-like (as if I weren't even drinking a beer) while the Tortuga has a kind of minty flavor.

Also, if it helps, here's a breakdown of the coffees used over the years:

    2010 Bottling: Intelligentsia Black Cat
    2010 Draft: Intelligentsia Bosque Lya
    2011 Draft: Intelligentsia Honey Badger
    2011 Draft: Intelligentsia Edelweiss
    2011 Bottling: Intelligentsia Anjilanaka
    2012 Bottling: Intelligentsia La Tortuga

I searched for Redline Espresso, and it appears to be made by Metropolis, which makes sense as it's another Chicago based coffee maker. Again, this is just what the server told me. I'd love for someone to verify the info I got.

Tasting order: Rare, Vanilla, (cantillion), BCBS 07,08,09,10,11,12, (cantillion), bramble, coffee 10, 11, 12, 12 draft
Pours were split 6 ways, so 2oz of 12oz bottles and 3oz of the bombers(with extra left over and shared later). About 36oz each over 5 hour period with lots of food and water.

I was comparing the 2012 draft versus bottle. Something was different, and I believe I wasn't the only one who commented on that. Carbonation was more lively on the draft but I could have sworn something in the taste was a bit different too. At least, that's what I remember writing. Then again, the Coffee vertical was the last of the day so take this all with a grain of salt (see: palate fatigue).

sorry to threadjack here (I'll post in the proper beer trading forum as well) but I thought someone in this thread might be able to help out. My buddy and I recently received a bottle of 2011 BCBS and now are hoping to find a 2010 for a mini vertical tasting. I was able to get a couple 4packs of the 2012 last fall and have a few bottles stored away in a cellar. I am hoping to find someone in the Chicago area who has 2010 BCBS and would be willing to make in-person trade. Just looking for 1 12oz bottle. What would it take to trade for something like this?

thats awesome, glad someone did this kind of proves a point of mine that aging your beer isnt always the best practice. the regular bcbs i can believe gets better with a little time because it is so in your face.

We're doing a BCBS tasting soon; friend has a couple bottles from the brewery before it was available for retail so should be quite interesting for sure.
