So it looks like I might be moving to the Dayton, Ohio area from Columbus by year's end. I lived there a couple decades ago when I was a kid and have family there; but they know not of craft beer. I'm curious as to what the Dayton area has to offer in the way of local breweries, beer stores and bars. I feel kind of spoiled living in Columbus and having so many good places where I can drink and buy a wide variety of craft beer within just a few miles. I'll be heading out to Dayton sometime in April to visit some family and look at some apartments. I've read about some places here on BA but I'm hoping to get some answers to the following questions:

    1) What are the local breweries in the Dayton metro area, are they anything worth while?
    2) From what I can gather, South Park Tavern and Chappy's Taproom seem to be the best bets for sitting down and drinking some good brew. Is this true and/or are there equal/better bars in the area?
    3) It seems like Belmont Party Supply is the main beer store in Dayton by a decent margin. Are there any other stores in the area that have a good selection of craft beer that I should check out? Also, why does Belmont seem to reign supreme in the area?

I appreciate in advance any answers or any additional information that anyone can provide me with about the beer scene in the Dayton area!

I will comment on the beer stores. Belmont is probably #1 in they have the largest selection and sell single bottles. There is one whole aisle of single bottles. I live in Vandalia (north Dayton) and feel Liquor and Wine Warehouse is not too far behind. The one thing that Liquor and Wine Warehouse has that Belmont doesn't is they do Growler fills. They typically have 5 or 6 different beers on tap. In regards to Dayton breweries, I know there are a couple that have just opened or are about to but I don't have much info on those. In regards to bars and places to drink a beer, I believe you mentioned a couple of the better ones. I know there are a couple of other places in Downtown Dayton Oregon district (5th Street Wine and Deli, Dublin Pub, and Thai 9) that are worth checking out. Being married with two kids most of my drinking is done at home with friends. Feel free to BM me if you have any specific questions I might be able to help with.

    1) Yellow Springs is the best local brewery that is open right now. The taproom isn't officially open til April 13, but a few of their beers are floating around town. Those guys know what they are doing!

    2) You are correct, Chappy's and South Park are awesome. Some other great spots are Kings Table, Lucky's, Trolley Stop, Bostons... If you like bourbon, check out The Century Bar. Love that place.

    3) Belmont Party Supply is #1, period, but there are a few around town that are good: Liquor and Wine Warehouse, Arrow Wine, 5th Street Wine And Deli are the other ones I'll go to. Rumbleseat wine has a decent beer selection as well.

As to why Belmont reigns supreme - they carry the ENTIRE line from breweries. That means they get all the year rounds, all the seasonals, and all the special release beers. They have everything. Seriously. EVERYTHING. They also sell pretty much everything in single bottles. Plus they will have special releases (recently things like 03.03.03, vintage Hopslam six packs, 2008 Pere Jacques, etc) and they will sell them for retail rather than mark up the prices.

And they have a homebrew supply store right next door so you can buy some finished products @ Belmont and brewing equipment/ingredients @ Brewtenils in 1 trip. They also have a state store for your liquor needs.
