Just to clean this part up:

"The 1960s case of Emmett E. Fisher shows that the tort of battery can include offensive contacts that are not necessarily physically harmful. Fisher, an African-American man, worked as a mathematician at an agency of the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA). An electronics company had invited Fisher to attend a meeting held at the Carrousel Motor Hotel. The hotel contained a restaurant called the Brass Ring, which served the luncheon for the meeting Fisher attended.

Fisher entered the Brass Ring and grabbed a plate for lunch. The manager of the Brass Ring snatched the plate from Fisher and shouted that negroes could not be served in the club. Fisher sued the hotel for battery, seeking compensatory and punitive damages for the humiliation he suffered as a result of the manager’s conduct. A jury awarded Fisher $400 in compensatory damages and $500 in punitive damages. However, a Texas appeals court reversed, finding that there was no battery because there was no direct physical contact.

On appeal, the Texas Supreme Court reversed in Fisher v. Carrousel Motor Hotel, 424 S.W.2d 627 (Tex. 1967). The Texas high court reasoned that the tort of battery consisted of offensive contacts, as well as physically harmful contacts."

The few I've been to was about the beer and not geeting drunk. It was the bonus. But there are always going to be that certain few.

My last GABF was in 2008, I believe. I'm done with it.

Now, I just go to a select few "locals"; Lander Brewfest is outdoors and always a blast. One in Casper that's pretty small but I meet up with friends at it so it's a worthy one to attend. The other I "usually" go to is the CO one in Ft Collins that is in, of course, a college town but I've never seen anything that I could say was upsetting there.

You're on the money. And speaking of money, maybe that's what breeds the bad behavior. There's little value in a beer fest unless you drink a lot, and drinking a lot leads to silly nonsense, or worse. At $50 or more per person to sample some beers that we might then buy, for what? I'll save my $$$ and we'll meet you at the bar.

I really dislike hearing the negative feedback on GABF. 2011 was my first and as a 31yo beer geek I thoroughly enjoyed both sessions I attended. Yeah, there was a lot of silly "oh!"s as some people got sloppy through the night, but I didnt witness anything but a lot of chill people who were having a good time. Having spent, what, 8 hours there, I didnt see one person making a douche out of themselves (there were a few nonthreatening asses though). Thursday was definitely very geekish, but as a beer geek, I enjoyed the notoriously frat partyish Saturday night session as my friends and I enjoyed Jolly Pumpkin, Russian River and other regional brews while the kids swarmed New Belgium, Dogfish and the others with national distro. I would recommend it to any beer lover.

The guys at Brewforia and from the Barley Bros. Traveling Beer show put on the best beer festivals in the PNW imo. The Boise Beer fest last summer blew Portland's Oregon Beer fest out of the water. Boise had better music, more beer, better beer, shorter lines, more food options, and was about 10 dollars cheaper.

Sorry but some of us have been 10+ times and recent years are nothing like it was in the past. Not to sound nostalgic and grumpy old man... it's just the way it is/was.

Gawd I'm not sure which is worse. Posting the elements of torts is unacceptable in any event.

Why does everyone assume that because I currently reside in TX that I have never left the state. I haven't even lived here all that long!!! The first half of my beer drinking experiences were up in NE States inside of New England. I was born and raised in NE Ohio.

I am down to get a bit intoxicated and let go and have fun. It is just the atmosphere that gets me down. Feels like these festivals target new beer lovers, trying to lure them with "lots of shiny new beers" more than established craft beer lovers. They want to draw them in by the thousands, sell those tickets, and get as much profit out of it as they can. "insert city here" beer festivals often even sell Budweiser and the like. I just had the epiphany that it is about beer, not just craft beer.

I hear you on that. My wife and i actually left the ACBF in Boston last year because we were tired of the douchers. I'm 32 and I'd hate to think that I'm too old, but it may be true. Here in Boston we have the priveledge of hosting 10 million college students. I've never seen so much makeup and pretzel necklaces. When dudes started wrestling on the floor, we started for the door. Hoping the NERAX in Somerville MA is a bit more chill.

Brewery events are far from being included as beer festivals. I am talking about community events. Those ones with all the nice little tents lined up with breweries generally representing a few year round offerings and maybe the spring or summer seasonal.

Um, that's what both of those are. Russian River Beer Revival isn't directly affiliated with Russian River Brewing, it's a big outdoor beer festival by the river. It's technically hosted by Stumptown Brewing.

The Firestone Invitational is also a huge beer festival. This is the first year of it, though, so it's hard to gauge what the vibe will be. Given the sheer volume of world-class breweries there, we can only hope it will be great.

what festivals are you referring too? No bro's Ik are all hyped up about a craft beer fest. In fact, they hate any craft beer I offer them and think Budlight is good beer. I think they're way more likely to want to go to pcb than some craft beer fest. Brah

Thanks for the update. Once again, of course, this case is in no way similar/relevant to the situation alluded to by beerrandraiderfan (intentionally grabbing someone's plate of food as opposed to accidentally or inadvertently spilling someone's drink at a fest). I won't event get into the absurb suggestion that Fisher would have been within his lawful rights to jump and punch the waiter in the nose in an act of self defense.

I initially expected more lame responses like this one. Was surprised at how much agreement there was. I go to big beer festivals for three reasons.

1.) It is a good way to show a brewery you support them. I love chatting with the different reps and brewers, seeing them regularly helps keep a more personal relationship with the brewers you love..can we say networking? lol

2.) I need my regular doses of collectible pint glasses/tasters/free stickers/pins and other brewery goodies to throw in my beer trades and add to my own collection.

3.)They do only come once a year and I am a sucker for annual beer events.

I don't know about the self-defense part, but the original statement was actually "people will try and knock your glass from your hand so that the crowd can yell "oohhhhhhh",", so that's intentional, not inadvertent. That was the basis of bringing up this case.

I got my first, and last, taste of a beer festival last weekend at the Austin Beer Fest. If you care to read about it, head over to the Southwest page, but it was full of people who knew nothing about beer (lots of comments about "so many beers I'd never even heard of" despite EVERY beer there being available at Specs about 5 miles away) and there were plenty of pretzel necklaces and beer pong to go around. I know this event is not emblematic of what a good event can be, but in the future, I'll do a lot more research before I commit to a festival. Live and learn.
