If you are reasonably acquainted with CBS and swung by Meridian Pint today, I am keen to hear your thoughts.

    Mine?

Something was seriously wrong with it. Sure, it smelled like CBS...sorta. But the taste was a thin, tannic, mess. A pale imitation of its former self. Dare I say it, it tasted marginally "I word."

My appreciation for Founders quality makes it hard for me to think they produced infected CBS. So did Meridian Pint age the keg too long? Or did they pour it through dirty tap lines? It was AWFUL.

Anyone new to CBS, please do not judge it based on what you had tonight. That wasn't even close to resembling the natural wonder that is Canadian Breakfast Stout.

Anybody else pick up on this? Either Founders or MP seriously screwed the pooch here.

Bartender downstairs said the keg came from Founders. Was not impressed at all and seemed really off compared to the quality of KBS. Really weird flavors going on.

When this was on tsp at rattle n hum last year I had a similar experience. Thought it tasted like straight up soy sauce. Not infected but there was something seriously off about that keg. Had it out of a bottle a couple months later and it was killer.

Yeah, it was super tannic and thin, with a curious metallic tang. It tasted like early infection to me, though it could also have been dirty tap lines. Really disappointing either way. CBS is sacred and not to be trifled with!

If this was your first time having it, please seek it out again.

Knowing how seriously the guys at Meridian Pint take cleanliness of their lines I would assume you can count out dirty lines. Had to just be the keg.

It appears the immovable object has met the unstoppable force. Does Founders have infection issues or did MP let some of the funky Perennial Saisons it was pouring the night before sully its taps?

Not a dig on either organization, just massively disappointing and probably should have been caught before they charged it out at $9 a pop.

Just glad to confirm what I was tasting and let any CBS virgins who tried it tonight that they can't check that box just yet!

In the last 8 months I've had CBS four times (twice on tap and twice from bottles). (I've also had it on tap 5 times and from bottles 4 times before these last four...so I'd like to believe I have a good frame of reference)

IMO, the kegs have fallen off to the point where I didn't even finish my glasses. It had an off putting metallic taste, the maple was completely gone, and it was no where near the beer it once was. The bottles on the other hand, although the maple has faded a bit, they are still holding up quite well. I had one three weeks ago and still enjoyed it immensely.

i have had year old CBS on draft before. and it was actually better than the fresh pour on draft that i had side by side with it (this was about a year ago). i'm thinking it's the keg you had/different batch that just sucks. older CBS is not always bad, at least from older batches it's not

As said above I believe Meridian Pint takes clean lines very serious. It sucks they would put a keg on they possibly knew themselves was sub par. On the other hand there would have been a lot of pissed off people who showed up to specifically try CBS only to find they didn't deem it good enough to serve.

If that was at Teresa's I 100% agree with that assessment. The older keg was tremendous.

I think it was '10 and '11. IIRC, the newer keg was from same batch as the the bottle release, which was Octoberish/November in 2011.

My brother went right at 3 said it hadn't aged well, it was from 2010. Said the event overall was awesome and highlights were Sculpin on cask and a dorado on nitro. I saw him 4 hours later and he was a mess.

you are correct. because now that i think about it, '12 wouldn't have even been released by that time, probably. thank you.

I had it about 6 months ago at Rattle N Hum in NYC, it was totally infected. Very tannic and tart.

What a shame, kinda like remembering Muhammad Ali in his prime, and then seeing him today.

CBS on tap first time I tried it was the best stout I've tasted. How sad to hear this.

Got to agree. This did not taste like the bottle I had a couple years ago. Metallic and thin. Too bad, because I was really looking forward to tasting those amazing flavors again.

Word was it was from 2010. I picked up a bit of a sour note at the end. If I didn't know it was CBS and someone told me there was maple in it, I would have told them B.S. Aside from the CBS being subpar. The event at Meridian Pint was fantastic. Balllist Point, Hardywoond, and even Founders for the most part brought their A game to town.
