I really enjoy Black IPA's. Pizza Port's Tarantulas sets the bar IMO.

I find only established breweries can only brew a decent black IPA, probably due to the subtlety of the style and how only certain hops can mesh well with the darker malts. The ones from Stone, Deschutes and Hopworks have been good; but craft breweries that are more local to me have all failed to make an enticing version of the style.

I had this on St. Pattys day and thought it was great.

Stone 15th Anniversary and Odell Mountain Standard Time have been my two favorites so far, followed by New Glarus Blacktop and Shorts Goodnight Bodacious. I wish they were easier to find around here, but until they are, the style remains a staple in my homebrew.

Atlantis was the first beer I ever tried from Rising Tide Brewing Company, and it's the best Black IPA I've had. If they weren't "established" already when this brew came out, it definitely helped get them there.

I'm definitely a fan of Black IPAs. Some are better than others and there are many different interpretations of the style. Hoppin' Frog Hop Heathen and Arcadia B-Craft Double Black IPA are awesome. Stone obviously knows how to do em too. And Sierra Nevada Juniper Black Ale was great, I miss that beer..

... And I'd like to see Lagunitas, Founders, and/or Bell's brew and bottle a Black IPA.. there's a good chance they'd definitely nail it..

21st Amendment Back in Black was my first and probably my favorite. Also like Yakima Glory and Black Cannon. And Wookey Jack.

Lots of good mentions in here. I'll throw my support behind 21st Amendment Back in Black and Boulevard Grainstorm for Black IPA, and Stone Sublimely Self Righteous IPA for the Imperial Black IPA variation.

It's a hit or miss style for me also. For the most part, the hoppy flavors don't blend well with the roasty dark malts. I have had a few that I like well enough, that take on a sprucy or junipery pine hop flavor. But most that I've had were just kind of obnoxiously bitter. I think I just prefer for hops to be carried by lighter malts. And I certainly don't hate dark malt, I love porters and stouts and other dark beers.

I'd love to try some of the beers mentioned here...the ones that everyone seems to like, at least. Perhaps I just haven't had enough good examples of the style to properly judge. But right now, I can safely say that I'd prefer a light-malt/"regular" IPA over most black IPAs.

Hop in the Dark was the one that converted me. CDA/BIPA is definitely something I can get behind, as someone who was drawn initially to the dark side of craft brew (porters/stouts/etc) before slowly coming around to the hops
Dubhe, Wookey Jack, these are also super tasty examples

EDIT: How could I forget Sublimely Self-Righteous!?!?
    so good.

Love black IPA's. The first HF beer I ever had was a black IPA (James) and I loved it. Wookey Jack fresh is like Heady Topper dressed in black, too .

Never had a black IPA, always been a little scared to try them. IPAs just shouldn't be black to me lol.
