I review to a C average. Looking at my current ratings, it appears I did actually care for Merlin, but I had my average rating for that marked as lower in my own records; my other lower review from a different serving type was wiped during the duplicate serving type reviews purge.

If you accept that a C is average - not that it's bad (like in the American education system), I think you'll find my reviews are more than fair. I like to think that my notes accurately reflect my opinion. And just because a beer is average doesn't mean I don't like it. In fact, I love beer - so an average beer is plenty fine by me.

My hads - like my ratings - are all legitimate.

No, I got it right. The beer that we know as Velvet MERLIN used to be called Velvet MERKIN until they were forced to change the name (after all, a Merkin is a pubic wig).

Now there is a seperate beer called Velvet MERKIN which is barrel aged Velvet MERLIN.

    Read this for clarification.

Edit: And now I see where the confusion was. My apologies. I had it reversed, but by mistake.

Velvet Merkin (I believe is only on tap or for growlers). As for Merlin, I see that in stores. If you see the Merkin in bottles; def let us know.

I hope enthusiasm for Velvet Merkin is as tame as it is here when the beer comes out this fall so we can avoid having to listen to the Benny Hill theme song as we try to chase bottles down.

Read on FW webpage that Velvet Merkin is Velvet Merlin aged in bourbon barrels. Merlin is 5.5% and Merkin is 8.5%. Does it really gain 3% sitting in the barrels?

This is our Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout aged in Bourbon Barrels and it just won the 2010 and 2011 Gold medal at the GABF for barrel aged beers!!! This beer goes into the barrels as a roasty dark chocolate, coffee accented mild mannered stout and comes out transformed as a milk chocolate, smooth dark cherry, vanilla and coconut infused masterpiece. We are incredibly proud of this beer and it seems as though it was always meant to be a barrel aged brew.

A "C" is universally known in the US as an average grade. WTF are you talking about?

A C is the alleged average in the US, but a)Grading is rarely done on a true curve and B) it's now viewed as a bad grade. American parents have a tendency to look down on a series of C grades in their child's file. Perhaps it was at one point the actual average, but that is no longer the case.

    Additionally, see also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_inflation#Grade_Inflation_in_the_United_States

    http://www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2011/04/19/average-high-school-gpas-increased-since-1990

    http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/14/the-history-of-college-grade-inflation/

Clearly - i.e. according to US News and the New York Times - C (i.e. 2.0 on a 4.0 scale) is not actually the mean average in the USA.

That, sir, is WTF I am talking about.

Yeah, if all your teachers gave you a "C", it's not because they didn't like you... It's because you aren't very smart.

I guarantee that if you took a poll of your average American(any number) what they consider "average" is, the vast majority would say "C", regardless of what the actual stats are. We're talking about perception, not actual numbers. Stats from an article doesn't mean that's what holds true for a cultures view on something.
I assume you're not from the States?

Um even in the public schools I went to a c is just passing, just getting by. Also most people I've know look at it negatively and really see a B- as being ok. I've always looked at it like A is great, B is good, and C is getting by. Even when I went to blue ribbon school you had to not care to get lower then a C-. So it really didn't show much effort.

Edit: Can't wait to try velvet merkin for the first time this year
