I am in Minneapolis for work until Friday night. I can only get out to one brewery safely without looking like a lush in front of my boss. If you had to choose just one brewery to visit what would you recommend?

I'm not necessarily interested in the best food or the best live music, just the best beers and beer variety. Also if they do growlers, that is a plus.

    Thanks!

This one. There are several worthy "runners up" nowadays, so it's hard to go wrong! :sunglasses:

    My top picks would be:
Surly is about 15 mins from downtown but probably the most well known craft brewery in mn. Furious, Coffee bender and Overrated are all worth a taste (pretty much everything else too)

Town Hall. A solid choice, they also have growlers and good food. right in central mpls. try their masala mama if you go.

Indeed is in north east minneapolis and has a good lineup. Day tripper is my personal favorite form them.

Steel toe is in St louis park (10 mins from downtown). They just built a nice/new taproom and have good beer. Size 7 ipa is a must. (or size 11 DIPA if its available)

Nothing to do at Surly, so that is out.

Have to go to Town Hall. Then hit Republic across the street for most of the other locals mentioned aboved on tap.

Go to town hall which holds up pretty well against any of the breweries in town, then walk across the street to republic which should have most of the other local offerings on tap.

Town hall is the obvious answer here.

Definitely try to make it up to Northeast if you get a chance to sneak away from the boss. Indeed and Dangerous Man are great and pretty close together (and fairly easy to get to from downtown or Town Hall). Try the new Indeed IPA called Let it Ride and their coffee ale Burr Grinder. Then head over to Dangerous Man and try everything!

From what I've heard both dangerous man and indeed have traditions that are separated so much that they seem more like brewpubs anyhow, so maybe they aren't that different. I hate townhall ever since they got rid of my fish and chips, but their beer is all top shelf. The area had a pile of places that brew good beer, and you could find people to recommend any of them. You could go to any of them and have fun and enjoy the beer, but would bee left wondering about all the brewers you didn't sample or go to one of the best brewpubs(despite their lack of fish and chips) and have a convenient spot to sample nearly all other worthwhile options (sorry lucid). Have fun going to indeed and not having Any surly.

Fucking right. Best Fish 'n' Chips in town. And the Buffalo Penne too - gone. Seems like they've made a choice to go with dumbed down bar food, which is really, really, really too bad.

They sell good beer, but it is expensive. A Surly Furious will set you back $9.

Dangerous Man is definetely worth the trip, but all they do it beer. They are just getting started, but they may be making some of the best beer in the cities yet.

If you want food, stop and get some on the way and bring it into the brewery with you.

So, all they have is good beer now...sucks. The food was always my second draw to that place since the service has never been good, unless I was in a group.

I don't know how anyone failed to mention The Herkimer. IMO, it's on par with every other place mentioned. Plus the Lyndale Tap House is right across the street, which is wicked cool too.

I tried Herkimer again at Spring Ale Fest this past weekend, and surprisingly enjoyed both of their offerings (Black Saison and Rye PA). On par with the other places mentioned is definately a stretch, but they are finally starting to brew better beers. Herkimer just leaves a bad taste in many mouths based on the way they had been failing for the past 10 years.

And, if I am in the area I am going to Muddy Waters first.

Comparing The Herkimer and Town Hall is like comparing a high school football team to an NFL team.
