I 90% agree, but to play devil's advocate, the beer could have tasted fine, and that would have been the end of it. Plus spending $15 to send the bottle back just for the original owner to try it out for himself is barely even worth it. So it's a bit of an awkward situation.

That said, I definitely agree with "Loons leak, deal with it".

You've already arranged something, but I think we need to know what he said his plans were after telling you about the leakage. Did he say he'd try it and tell you if it was good?

If you ever have issues, make sure it's clear up front what both sides feel the solution is. And NEVER drink any traded beer until both sides are happy and feel the trade is completed.

Everyone should acknowledge this before trading loons.

Ultimately I think it is the job of the trade to make sure that their bottle makes it through shipping in one piece. If the bottle of FF opened in shipping they should have to make sure that a full one or substitute makes it ok. If you think a bottle may leak then don't ship it, simple as that. The guy that got the FF should be able to save it to drink whenever he wants. If he had choose to save it, he shouldn't be forced to spend more money on shipping because the beer leaked.

Except it's not that simple when you are dealing with a brand of beer that leaks in transit more often than not. If it was that simple, then nobody would ever trade for Cantillon. Both parties kind of have to go with it eyes wide open.

The issue at debate here is whether this was something more than an ordinary Cantillon leak. (i.e. if the cap actually came off...)

Recently when I traded for a bottle of cantillon the trader brought up the point that cantillon bottles can leak, and if I would be ok with that. I said I haven't had any issues with bottles leaking, so I would take the risk. I do think it is something to discuss before the trade happens.

Lets not go crazy, you are too important to the BA community to take this risk. I'll bear the burden here.

    This.

If I received a leaker and was leery of its contents, I would take no less than seven pictures of said bottle.
