This is my first BIF. I would like to clear up the focus for this BIF, especially with the large amount of participants. I assume that Cuzco will do this when we get our targets.

    1. 100oz min of local, non-widely distributed brews.
    2. 1 piece of brewery stuff. (coasters and stickers do NOT count for this.) Think shirt, glassware, hat, so on and so forth....

Should we make a limit on the number of Whales? Or should we say that the first 100oz is local non-whale beers? Or is it just 100oz of ANY local beers. I am excited to send out some San Diego goodness, but I just want to be sure about what the rules are so that all is fair and fun for everyone. P.S. I assume "porch busting" is always the goal with a BIF...

Thanks for setting this up Nate!

I agree, and would like to know the stipulations. Yet at this point I plan on my recipient hiring a contractor to rebuild his porch when I'm done unloading on it

I would assume the stipulations are simply fulfill the Minimum requirements for the BIF...anything else that you do or do not decide to do is up to you.

Oh man, this looked good. I was told to try BIFing by NoSignsOfPain. Got any MD people in this BIF? No trades, but I got a few lined up. This would be a great introduction.

I'm pretty stoked to get going on this. Plan on hitting up a few local breweries that don't even distribute bottles in MI to get some stuff to send out. I may need advice on packaging, though. I've never shipped out a mass quantity of beers before, just a few bottles. I'm assuming UPS or Fed Ex is the way to go w/ shipping? Nothing against USPS but.... yeah. I'll just leave it at that.

Alewatcher's blog (link below) is an excellent resource and recommended reading for anyone who hasn't traded before. It should answer all your questions.

UPS or Fed Ex is definitely the way to go. It's illegal to ship beer with USPS.

    Edit: Agree with Ol_Johnny_Skippelwicky

A lot of people have indicated they aim to send a box full of wow, goddamn, and holy shit. So if I got a box which met minimum requirements and nothing more, I wouldn't hold it against the sender, but my goodwill for future BIFs would be gone.

Do agree we should refine standards, maybe a max. I intend to send out as good a box as I can, but if the one I receive blows mine away, even though my intentions were good I'll feel like crap.

It's still illegal with UPS and Fedex, they're just not government agencies and will likely be more lenient should you get caught. But just pack your box well and you will be fine.

I second this refinement! I think a max volume is all we need though, because hopefully people understand that they should be shipping out good beer...

I intend on shipping out a lot of great beers, but I also fully intend on tucking away an Old Style in there, just for old times sake. There's nothing wrong with a little bit of old school class.

If a maximum is set, that will give people a chance to decide if they are
going to blatantly ignore it, or "accidentally" lose count. I tend to have difficulty
keeping track of ounces once I get beyond 3 or 4 bottles.

    Philanthropists gonna philanthropize!

At least if there are parameters the majority of people will know what to shoot for and hopefully every target is happy with what they get.

No rules against sending a follow up box if the aggression toward your porch is to much for you to handle . I think the current BIF setup is enough. Beer karma is a thing, and it all tends to sort itself out in the end.
