Was at the bottle shop and found some bottles brewed in 2004. They were on the shelf in probably 65-70. Would you steer clear ?

Buy it!!! Even just from a curious standpoint.

I don't know about the Pater 6, but the Tripel ages rather terribly even in the best of conditions. However, if the bottles are cheap (<$4-5 for 11.2oz), trying the aged Tripel will be a cheap and useful lesson in why you shouldn't age anything and everything.

Really? I have several Tripels I am attempting to age: Chimay White, VarTripel, Westmalle, La Fin Du Monde, Affligem. I am hoping nothing will go to waste.

Depending on the price I'd jump on them.

I guess this is where I hop in to say that I don't care for the taste of aged tripels. The best ones, IMO, are fairly dry to start with, with their appeal being a balance of the spicy yeast, delicate hop character, cracker dry malt profile all enhanced by a fairly high level of carbonation. None of these are characteristics that have any room to improve with age. Oxidized/stale/faded hops aren't fun, the yeast character is dulled, the malt might gain a little fruitiness with oxidation, and the combination isn't particularly appealing to me. Maybe someone with more experience can hop in and chime in why they do or don't like aged tripels.

I bought the Pater 6 and must say it held up quite well for a 6.7% beer on a warm shelf for 8 years, it had a lot of berry flavors, decent carbonation and head. If nothing else it lets me know how well these hold up. The beer was facing a large glass window in a bottle shop in Texas !!!!
