Just had this and wow!! After only scoring a 4pack of KBS I was a little disappointed till I tried this! If you are in Chicago count yourself lucky!

I disagree and I've had both. I do have some mean gene aging however.

I'm not surprised that you find another beer better. I had 2 of the KBS this year and just think there are better beers, especially for the price. That's not to say KBS isn't superb, because it is. Off the top of my head I'd prefer BCBS, Big Bad Baptist, and Williamsburg's Bourbon Barrel Porter. BCBS and the Baptist are more complex to me, while the Bourbon Barrel Porter is close to as good and less pricey. I'd also take Backwoods Bastard over KBS. I can get it for 4 bucks a bottle versus the $7 I paid for KBS.

Bean gene is awesome, but it's no KBS...oh wait I have several bombers. I should be trying to talk it into whale status

Didn't realize this was getting distribution, picked some up at the Taproom several weeks ago.

It was at the Beer Temple, and I assume it will get the same distro as straight jacket, and 3rd year beer

I respectively disagree with you. Solid brew but no KBS.

lol maybe I'm just searching for a substitute since kbs was impossible to find in Chicago-land this year. Last year I got a case and a half with little effort. They year I got 4 bottles, Times are changing!

Pretty sure Bourbon County is the KBS killer...

While I thoroughly agree that BCBS is better than KBS, isn't that comparing apples to oranges? Unless, you are referring to BCBCS that is...

Isn't comparing stouts to porters apples and oranges as well?

Definitely not a KBS-killer. My bottles were significantly worse than what I had on-tap at the release party

Then again, we are comparing a BA porter to a BA imperial stout.

A "imperial stout" is under the porter category. Usually the difference is the above but I have seen many stouts in the 8.5 range. They both have the same flavor profile like roasty/malty. When I home brewed a porter a couple months ago it was pretty much a stout. Apples and Oranges would be most capped to describe a porter to an IPA.

Not nearly as much barrel/coffee presence compared to the tap version I tried. Had bit of a twang to it as well. I actually preferred Mean Gene over Bean Gene out of the bottle.

I never had it on tap but would have loved too. Hope they'll make more next year.

bean gene is the single biggest disappointment for me since hardywood ba gbs. too little barrel character and kind of artificial tasting. i wish they would bottle or can regular coffee eugene, that shit is off the chain.

They use dark matter coffee. Lots of coffee flavor but not "artificial", now frangelic mountain brown, that's artificial...
