Just because the Founders website says it isn't the same beer doesn't make it true, although it is likely that KBS is brewed with more coffee, as the coffee flavor has to survive a year of barrel aging prior to bottling.

the thing i've always wondered about is whether or not KBS has oats in it - this seems like it could account for one major difference in the base beer, besides the slightly higher final ABV KBS makes its way to. never been able to find any clear information one way or another, while FBS clearly states it contains oats.

    Thanks for posting their response.

    Both are great beers.

Fbs and kbs are both great brews, in the grand scheme of things does it really matter whether or not fbs is the base beer for kbs?

My answer: shut up and drink.

Some of us are in the know, but I'd say its not clearly evident at first glance who Schmi11y really is since he doesn't sign off his posts, etc. But that's OK, a little anonymity is probably better that way

I guess its easy to overlook since he didnt sign off or anything... but by just clicking on his profile page hes pretty open about what he does.

Interesting that you'd describe FBS as hoppy. Hops are the last thing I think of when I drink that beer.

Brilbecks. You would think they would get it as well.

I was thinking this exact thing. I would think maybe KBS does not have oat meal.

WTF? He could be a homebrewer, studying to be a better server, or just generally curious about the topic. What's wrong with asking questions about beer on a message board dedicated to beer? We're on this website because we're interested in beer and many of us wish to learn more. Asking questions is how you learn.

I am not a homebrewer so I didn't think about it in that respect. There is certainly no reason that asking questions is in any way a bad thing, I've learned a lot from asking questions and reading forums since I joined ba. I really just felt like saying shut up and drink.

Haha sorry. Upon seeing this topic yet again and having not had my morning coffee, I felt like this--->

I just love both of these brews equally in their own way.

Yeah, I am a homebrewer, in fact I made a RIS yesterday with cocoa nibs, bittersweet chocolate and coffee kind of as a tribute to KBS. I wasn't just interested because I want to "clone" or brew the recipe or something, I just have a genuine interest in the beer and what goes into it. KBS is one of my favorite brews and the more I can understand about it the better.

Not necessarily, I believe it was highbrow but he explained once (with links I believe) that barrel aging can actually lower ABV. It depends on different factors such as temperature, humidity, etc.

What? What source would you find more reliable? OK, maybe it's not 100% guaranteed true, but it's infinitely more likely to be true than any other source you have. They can't monitor or control everything every beer rep says, but it's pretty simple to get the right info on a web site.

They might not want to say on their website that all they are doing is throwing their Breakfast Stout into bourbon barrels, even if that is exactly what they are doing. It might make the beer less special, or make us all quite puzzled as to why they can't make more of it.

You would think so. But frankly, they're terrible about information, out of date beer, or communication (i.e., web presence). I never shop there anymore, it feels unnecessary and more often than not a waste of time considering the increased quality of our other options here.

I don't know, I've been to Party Source and thought their selection was pretty poor. It looked like they were just running out of everything. Brilbecks was incredible selection wise, and yeah, the people who work there don't know too much about the beer.
