I posted this in another thread on another forum earlier, before realizing that it probably belongs here:

We have a relatively new brewery here in L.A. called Golden Road, started by the Tony's Darts Away guys. The brewpub is fun, and the beer is okay--they have a nice little sessionable IPA called "Point the Way" that's one of my easy local go-to's. They used to can it in four-packs of 16oz. cans, which was pretty great.

About two months, with a new brewmaster on board, they changed the recipe for Point The Way--a more balanced profile, and a bump in ABV from 5.2% to 5.9%. At the same time, they changed the packaging to 12 packs of 12oz. cans. So far, so good.

The problem is, there's still a shit-ton of the older recipe in four packs on store shelves everywhere. To my mind, Golden Road should be recalling the four-packs of the old recipe--not only for freshness sake, but for the brand's sake (I'm a marketing guy, BTW). First world problem, I know, but am I the only one who thinks keeping the old recipe out on shelves is kind of greedy/icky? They only distribute in SoCal, so it wouldn't be that hard to recall.

Golden Road is distributed to NoCal as well. All new product though.

That's what happens when you flood the market with a mediocre product.

I really don't think it's a big deal at all.

I have been thouroughly unimpressed by the point the way. I'd vote for the recall just because it isn't that good.

This is a huge problem honestly. Golden Road has never impressed me, but I'd love to give their revised IPA a chance. Problem being all the local stores who carry Golden Road have a TON of old product just sitting there...

My local WF has some from 4-2012. I have been meaning to mention it to the beer buyer and will do so this week.

If we all say something maybe they will take notice?

This is what happens when you put profits ahead of product. Some may buy into if but we are smarter today. I'll give their new IPA a fair shake but give me a reason to buy their $16.99 12 pack over Sierra Pale cans for $11.99 @ Total Wine. I don't give a crap about local, hip ect.... The freshest best tasting beer for he dollar wins in my book every time. No exceptions.

I could guess that the few people in charge of receiving and ordering prolly don't know they have old shit or there is a new brewer/recipe. All I can do is bring it to their attention. Rather do that than sweep it under the rug. These are my broskis.

WF corporate big dogs seem to be in control when it comes to GR. I remember when my local store got a pallet of get up brown and were chuckling how that happened. It's a running joke at this point if "you got any that get down brown left?" :stuck_out_tongue:ointsat5ftendcap:

I doubt you will see Tony recall any of their product regardless of how old it is. They were gung-ho about making clients and not giving too much of a shit about the product from the get go.

I have to admit that once the Drakes brewer came in, the ship really did get turned around. They're cranking out product you can at least say you're happy with. The new point the way recipe is a lot better - by no means is it great, but improving on crap isn't too difficult.

They changed the wolf among weeds recipe completely and it's a big improvement as well as their other offerings are at least tempting. I do like their brew pub and the Chole's atmosphere is really awesome. Still, the company has that "let's flood the market" mentality that isn't going to win a lot of folks over. I doubt they would even be able to eat up cost of product by recalling older cans and it's on the store to deal with their overstock.

This thread is almost ridiculous for 2 reasons:
    1) we all know that the product will never be recalled come 5 years from now will still be on shelf and Tony will not care
    2) we all know this beer is like the budweiser of craft beer IPA's if you can even call it craft beer would more just call it homebrew in a little bigger setting
and to finish I will conclude that everything I have tried from Golden Road is pedestrian and subpar to the craft beer scene

I wouldn't say it's like craft beer of Bud. It's just alright. Nothing special. But for a fairly new craft brewery here in LA they should be putting out better quality beer. The pub is really nice. Food is good too. But if I were to go back for another visit I would wait and see if they improve on their brews. Come on now guys. We have the number one craft beers in the world south of LA/OC in sunny San Diego. And thats all Golden Road can do? Thats like taking a step backwards in the craft beer industry. Thank god we have Beachwood BBQ & Brewery in our backyard!!!

I will say the new brewer to Golden Road, formerly from Drakes, is making strides to turn these beers around. I'm just glad to see that they have recognized a change was needed, and actually changed some of their flagship beer recipes, rather then just driving ahead with the old ones, and only making new ones, they are doing both.

I've had the opportunity to go back and try the new wolf among weeds, the revised Point the way IPA, as well as some of his own recipes which are new to the brewery, "It's not always sunny in LA" and the "big lebrowski" (there are other new draft only beers too but only had the four I mentioned) vast improvements, imo. Though the hop profile of both the IPA's are not to my personal preference, they are much better crafted beers then they were, more flavor, and balanced.

The RIS, the big lebrowski, is also solid. The pub itself is comfortable, food is good, and now the beers are enjoyable. They still have a ways to go, but to me, seems a page/corner has been turned, and so far, in a positive direction.

How is this a solution? The problem is that old beer is sitting on shelves, and in this case not only old but an older recipe. I've been to the brewery before, and I don't care for their beers. There's better breweries out there if I want to visit a brewery. If this was a brand new brewery with no distribution I'd definitely go out of my way to visit, but right now Golden Road needs to bring me back to them.
