Mix A Six In Places It Isn't Allowed?

If its a beer of the same price/brand, I don't feel too guilty about doing it. If a brewery has multiple pricing on their sku's, I try to make it as fair a swap as possible by choosing the more expensive brand's 4/6 pack carrier. My local shop "caught" me once- and asked if I knew there was a different beer in there - after going through the usual play dumb routine they said I could keep or swap it and that they actually encourage people to do it - how they actually encourage people is another story as there are no signs saying you can or nothing advertising a mix six.

Ive done it before with the warm selection of mix a six and changing it out with a cold one from the cooler of the same kind. I see no harm and no foul in that

That would be a wrong assumption, the large chain grocery store I frequent gets both

I don't either, but just to play devil's advocate...what if they only put bottles in the mix six section based on freshness dates, perhaps to try to sell what they can before it expires?

This brings up an interesting question...I know some breweries buy back unsold beer when it's past it's date. Do they do this for singles too? It would make sense that they would, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if some had a policy of not doing it if the six-pack is broken up.

I usually only do it if its fresh stuff, I am aware of the dates so I make sure if its something from the same bottling date. Otherwise I can wait til its cold at home

Your asking if I think stealing is wrong. Yes. My answer is yes.

This sort of stuff happens all the time, and if you're the kind of person who does this, then fuck you. My friend went to get a 4 pack of Oaked Bastard, came home with it, and saw that all 4 bottles were exchanged for Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye. I'm not sure if that was an employee that mixed them up or a customer being an asshole, but that kinda sucks. Not that Hop Rod is bad, but definitely not as good as Oaked Bastard.

I always check what I grab, all 4 or 6 bottles, because I know there are jerks out there who will do this. It has saved me a headache on several occasions.

Our local Ralph's and Von's carry Sculpin for $14.99/6pk--one of the most expensive sixers they sell at either store. It's also more than any other Ballast Point beer they carry (including Big Eye which someone else asked about in another comment in here). It's conceivable to swap all 6 of those out with 6 from a different BP beer and save $4-5 in the process. That'd obviously be stealing and a major, major dick move.

On a side note, I bought their Yellow Tail Pale Ale at Ralph's once and found a bottle of Big Eye in it when I got home. Bonus for me.

To the premise of the original post - there's little doubt that stealing is wrong and a lame move was made.

Regarding the thread title - the stores I shop most frequently are pretty liberal with their policy, but they aren't grocery stores. One has a specific section, but two others place no restriction and you can pull from sixers and four packs on the shelf as you wish. There are no self-checkouts and every bottle is pulled from a mixed pack when you go to pay. You get a discount overall, but the price is charged for each bottle separately and you get a couple bucks off the total. So while it would be a low life move to swap out BMC for craft and leave a "reverse mixed six" on shelf, you aren't walking out the door paying for a six pack sleeve of Bud filled with hidden goodies either. This has got to play bloody havoc with inventory and I am sure it is a true PITA for the store, but I am also glad it is allowed. And when I grab a full pack, I double-check knowing policy in certain stores could result in bottles ending up darn near anywhere.

Whether mixing is allowed or not, respecting the rules and adhering to store policy just doesn't seem all that difficult. Pretty simple to ask about the policy. Do people pulling this stuff go out and celebrate how they scammed the store and got away with something? .

Well I'm glad that the general consensus on here is that the guy was being a douche, that's how I felt watching him the entire time.

This is such a dick move and does affect the store. There will be a bunch of oddball sixers on the shelf either missing bottles or have incorrect product. So now everyone who shop the store needs to check the bottles to make sure its what they purchased? Buy the 6 pack.

You should have told someone in the store.

I agree with the BAs here who say this is NOT the kosher thing to do. I'd only do it if the store allows it.

The other day I watched some ~25 year old woman come out of this salon in a shoppimg center and hop in her car.. which was parked in a handycap space. Yeah she just got her nails done, and she whips out her phone and starts texting before she pulls away. Oh, she had a handycap tag, but I'm guessing she borrowed it from Grandma. Some people are just ignorant. * shrug *

Sculpin is 15 for a 6 pack in SoCal too? I've only seen it for that much in New York.
