Wine/beer tastings must be a huge waste of time in your eyes then?

I think somewhere in the thread tickers were declared "anti-hoarders" and therefore one step evolved from pond scum as their consumption doesn't include accumulation, thus leaving beers available on shelf for others.

Hahahaha....some people take themselves and beer WAY to seriously.

"One step evolved from pond scum" - hahaha.

Beer "hoarders"? What is that? People work and make money and spend that money on what they want. If that is mass quantities of craft beer....what's it to you?

I couldn't care less about the numbers. I just love beer and like to try ones I haven't had before. More often than not, when I go to buy beer, I'll pick something I haven't had before, but it certainly isn't to tick off a box. It's to see if I can find a new brew to add to my favorites list. Having the same beer(s) over and over again just seems so... boring. And bland. I don't even care if I don't like the beer I'm trying -- I'm still happy that I've tried it, because you learn just as much about your preferences from finding things you don't like.

I just like to keep track of all the beers I've had, good and bad ones. It's fun, and I like to try different things, and as many as possible.

That being said, I generally try to make it a new style, and I absolutely pick up my favorites. It's not about having the longest list, or even to say I've tried everything, but because it's fun for me to update my list, especially when discussing favorite beers from certain breweries, I have a point of reference. Most favorites I remember, however, there are some that were really good that slip my mind sometimes.

But yeah, if there's something I know I like, and I'm really craving, I'll pick it up even when I have an option to try something new. (I also have a rule that I don't add it to my list if I have less than 4oz of it, or I'm too buzzed to truly taste it).

Don't know if any of that makes me a "ticker" but that's what I do, and I have fun with it, and I'll continue to do so!

No, because I would generally only go to a tasting where I was expecting to possibly like some of the beers. I try to be selective.

I wouldn't go to a tasting of Budweiser variations just so I could "tick" them off a list. I willfully discriminate what I drink. Quality, not quantity.

Quality is subjective, and so is your opinion of it. That being the case its best not to judge and best to keep your opinions about the choices of others to yourself .

Absolutely. I'm currently hunting down to try more styles, especially European beers.

I'm just arguing that my goal is never to try beers for the sake of trying beers. There's always a goal. Generally it is to try higher reviewed beers than lower reviewed beers. However, style matters to me as well. I drink beers in mid 80s or high 80s, as well as beers in 90s.

If you are asking me personally, I could generally give a rat's ass what anybody else does since hoarding beer isn't the most dastardly deed in the world, but I do care what I do. If a person's "thing" is collecting up massive quantities of beer they might never drink and they want to stare at their collection fine by me. If somebody wants to buy every bottle of a limited release driving to 57 different stores to build their stash (then brag about it), sell it for ridiculous prices, and people are fool enough to buy it - nope, that's none of my business either.

Hoarding beer (or anything else for that matter) is something I simply choose not to do. The question can be turned around quite well - I don't choose to chase down and hoard up massive quantities of craft beer - what's it to you?

I do apologize for not quoting the original source in the thread and for not including appropriate cautionary disclaimers that my post may have been just a little sarcastic.

I think it would be a negative thing to try to use it to one's advantage in conversation to brag. I tick off the check list in the back of the book, 300 beers to try before you die. That by definition would make me a ticker. I bought the book to explore the many core examples of beer styles. When I go to a beer store with a "singles" selection I always try to purchase something I haven't tried on the 300 list if they have it available.

I think it is not so much a bad thing. It's why I got into drinking good beer, because when I discovered how well beer could taste, I thought, "what else can I try?"

I think you should start the "Why is it bad to be a hoarder?" thread and be prepared to be raked over the coals.

I always find myself wanting to go out and find different beers, but usually I just come back with whatever I know I like for sure.

Raked over the coals? That implies that I give a shit about what people on a beer forum think, and that simply isn't the case.

I really could care less if someone chooses to buy a bunch of beer to do nothing but look at it. The people that have a negative opinion of people who do that tend to be angry that they missed out on something. Well, I learned at an early age that life isn't fair and you are not entitled to anything. No sense in crying when you miss out...someone just wanted it more than you and worked harder to get it....tough shit.

No, it implies that you'll find out what people think, not that you'll care. But be sure to keep posting here, over and over again, about how much you don't care what other people think.

You must be under the impression that sharing my opinion on the subject means that I care about the opinion of others? Sorry to have mislead you, but one does not mean the other.

Why would I start a thread with the purpose of finding out what people think...when I infact do not care what people think? Someone else can start the thread and ask the question and I will gladly share my opinion...but that does not mean that I care about your's.

I can see what you are trying to do though...imply that my posting means that I do infact care and that somehow discredits me. A for effort, but you are mistaken.

I tick for the same reasons I eat different foods and watch different movies. I like variety and am not satisfied with the monotony of the same old thing time after time. Plus, I don't define myself with a singular beer identity as one would with their favorite sports team. Yeah, I'm just not that guy in the same team jersey drinking the same beer day after day. This is likely why I don't buy dvds. Why spend $20 to watch the same movie 50 times when I can watch many movies?

We all enjoy things differently. It doesn't make it bad.

I like to think of myself as going through a ticking phase. Basically trying everything that I can in my area to see what my favorite is. Since I'm still fairly new to the game it's fun seeing what types I like. But I've never reviewed (well "had") a beer based off of anything less than a whole bottle.

I feel like it'd be weird to review a beer before I finished it or if I only had had a 2 ounce pour. Next we'll have movie critics that only review the opening credits.

^ i tick not for the purpose to find a favorite, but to discover the variety of styles.
