Why is this? I know Founders doesn't have this but at Bell's they do.

Yes they do. It's a law. They can't just choose to comply with it. I'm assuming the price just includes tax and deposit. We don't have sales tax on booze in MA but we do have deposits. Some shops include the deposit in the marked price (so a bomber is marked $9 but is really $8.95 plus $0.05 deposit) and others don't.

Bottle deposits and taxes are laws, and breweries don't get to choose which laws they obey. But sales taxes and bottle deposits are imposed by states (or counties or towns), so they vary everywhere, and they are collected at the point of sale, not by the brewery. Any taxes paid by the brewery itself are included in the price of beer sent out the door to distribution, so are invisible to you.

Yeah, it seems pretty common in CA breweries or even bars that have licenses for off premises sales that the tax and deposit are included in the price (e.g. at RRBC, SARA, Toronado) but they still have to collect the tax and deposit (CRV here).

So you pretty much save on average 1.50$ to $2.00 when you buy a 4 or 6 pack of beer directly from Founders or another brewery that does this. Since tax and beer deposit are included. Also there is no middle man making a profit.

You can look at it that way, but I think Founders typically prices their bottles higher than the bottle shops so that they do not undercut the prices of their retailers. So that higher amount can be the tax and bottle deposit.

EDIT: I have never bought bottles at the brewery; I'm stating the info above about their higher prices based upon what I have read in previous threads about pricing.

It depends on the state you are purchasing it in. Here in Illinois, no bottles have a bottle deposit. In Michigan all bottles have a deposit.

It's definitely cheaper based on the prices I've seen in stores for Founders beers. They sell their year round beers for 9 bucks a 6 pack. Backwoods Bastard is 12 bucks a 4 pack at the Brewery, most places it's between 13 bucks to 15 bucks. That's pretty much the cheapest you can find it anywhere unless a store has a special going
