thought this was a pretty interesting article in Popular Science. Also link to the brewery at the bottom.

Nothing hits the spot after a long hike more than a beer, but lugging a six-pack through the wilderness isn’t as appealing. Brewers have toyed with portable beer concentrates before—by evaporating the water from finished brews. But along with the water go the hops, which impart flavor. Pat Tatera of Pat’s Backcountry Beverages developed a process to brew concentrate instead of beer. With seltzer—the company also sells a $30 carbonator bottle—campers can turn one pouch of it into a pint of full-flavored pale ale.

Pat's Backcountry Beverages Pale Ale: Claire Benoist
Tatera’s brewing process starts like that of any ale. He boils water and malt to create wort—unfermented beer—then cools the mixture and adds yeast to ferment it. Instead of finishing the brew there, he builds a concentrate. He vacuum distills the mixture and reserves the ethanol, leaving behind a syrup. Then he starts the process again, adding the syrup instead of water. He ferments again, removes the ethanol, and repeats. In total, he brews each batch four times. He then soaks hops in the reserved alcohol and adds it to the syrup. The final concentrate is 10 times the strength of beer, and with the addition of water, it’s ready to drink. Just add bubbles.

I wonder if there will be enough demand for his product to lead him to produce cans or bottles?

Whats the point of the cans of bottles? they come in little GU packs. there is a carbonator bottle they sell too, to add water and carbonate it.

I'll only buy this if it comes in a bowtie shaped pouch.

AHHHH so me and my friends were not the only ones to come up with this concept... granted we never did anything about it, but we did have this basic idea 6 months ago. well maybe ill have to try this some time!

lol, I was wondering the same. I can see this getting out of hand and people doing shots of the concentrate and it eventually getting banned... unfortunately.

Seems to me that alcohol would be missing from that equation...
how can you possibly power alcohol? and if so, why, for the love of GOD cant I go buy some? lol. but seriously, i would assume that it is evaporated somehow, thus leaving out alcohol?

The point is people are lazy. Not everyone hikes, not everyone wants to spend $30 on a carbonator, and not everyone wants to self-carbonate. If it tastes good, people might ask him to can it and save them the hassle.

Geez! What next? You going to suggest I make my beer from scratch?

I am still skeptical that this product exists. People have been posting about it (usually around April 1st) for at least two or three years. Nobody has tried it and you can't buy it anywhere.

My suspicion is that this is a troll job meant to attract attention and sell the other non-alcoholic products you can actually buy from this company.

Hey, ask the unnamed "Germans" - even 50 years later, the Belgians couldn't figure out how to do it, either - they had to add water, CO2 and alcohol to theirs.

As "leedorham" notes above, it's not "News" because it's an old story - posted numerous times, like here last August - and apparently the "beer concentrate" has never been marketed (check their "store").

At +50% ABV it probably couldn't be sold in most states as "Beer" and would no doubt also run into problems with the TTB unless labeled under some type like #699 - "OTHER SPECIALTIES & PROPRIETARIES " (which is what Brewdog's 41% Sink the Bismarck is imported under) and would probably require a license other than a brewer's license.

This "beer" is back in the news:
It seems they've been doing PR every four months for the past year without actually selling anything. The problem is, turning the gimmick into beer won't be that easy--or cheap.

Just what the world needs--a bag of dry suds...

As someone who hikes almost every day and backpacks every other week... I would rather lug around a few cans.

looks like they should be on the market in Spet. though. So they finally have a timeframe. They are going through liquor stores, for obvious reasons.
