Just curious? Only 120 bottles out there. Is a Blabaer out of the question and laughable? What about throwing in an Arctic Devil? Or a Collage?

I am curious of this too. I am considering looking for a Wanderer, Fantasia or T25 with Coloquio de Cervantes.

While this has a staggeringly low bottle count, so do things like BA Behemoth with Cherries and a smattering of Jackie O's offerings. Seems interesting, but a dark rye wild ale might not command the pedigree of something like that blab, people want to step on your berries to get that blue.

Plus the sole comps seem to come out in waves and waves, so much so that the average blabby holder might be wary of casting some chips in a dice game of largely unreviewed bottles. These are all hypotheticals straight up violating the prime directive of the trade world though, toss up an ISO and put on some Sidney Bechet and see what happens. someone might get pregnant.

Honestly, most of the Sole Comps I've had have been good/interesting, but not amazing. Yes, they're 120 bottle or fewer releases, but there are LOTS of them, and few have name recognition (which comes back to them being good-but-not-great). Off hand, the original Blend Love, Barrel-Aged (Fantasia) Five, Barleywine, and Special Herbs come to mind as Sole Comps people have explicitly asked for in ISO's. Generally speaking, the rest are novelties that would be interesting to try but probably not tempting enough to let go of rare, world-class beers like Blåbær.

I can say from personal experience that it's nice getting them as extras :grinning:

I've traded for many Sole Comps....many,, lol. Blabaer, in my opinion is WAY high. Most of mine were got with solid, limited things.

low bottle count = low bottle count, not desirability. many speculators will learn this the hard way.

All but one case (or perhaps two?) of El Coloquio de Cervantes was sold in Eugene at the Bier Stein for $22 a bottle, one-bottle limit. The other case was sold at the brewery, one-bottle limit as well (but $15). So this is a little different than other Sole Comps. I doubt many people were able to buy extras bottles for trading. Would a Blabaer land one - most likely, as that's a pretty solid offer. Will standard shelf or seasonal offerings get one - likely not.

I can tell you right now, the Sole Comp barleywines that came out a month or two ago...don't trade for shit.

Yes, and these things sit around at the brewery for weeks somehow. I was just there yesterday and they had 3 Sole Comps available in bottles and 2 of them on tap. Practically giving the shit away at $3 per 12 oz glass, which is unbelievable for us Tri-Staters.

A few contributing factors: Upright doesn't announce the Sole Comp releases any more; they've dropped the bottle limit to 2 per person; they have limited hours and are in a sort of annoying location; there's way to freaking much beer being released in Portland all the time; $15 is a pretty expensive beer by local standards so non-traders may balk at the price; many of the local traders have stopped buying the Sole Comps for trade because they don't generally pull anything more than any beer we can buy in the grocery store any time; some people don't like some of the staff at Upright.
