Saisons back off tap. Wife stopped in to grab some growlers. Saison was kicked already at 1:30-2:00.

So, they can handle the stubby 32oz growlettes. I might have to pick up one or two online somewhere. 64oz growlers are great if I people to share with, but personally find no pleasure in drinking an entire growler by myself. Depending on the alcohol, sometimes I also split a 32oz serving over two days. Will have to do some searching so that I can make the trip to the brewery a bit more often... well worth the hour drive.

NEBCO just started selling the 32oz growlers this week at the brewery for $4.

That Galaxy is quite delicious.... and I also picked up a 32oz of Gandhi on Sat as well as a couple 668 glasses. They have plenty to share by the way! Always a good time stopping into NEBCo.!

Visiting NEBCO on Tuesday and purchasing my very first growler, ever.
Question... what is the best way to keep the beer fresh for 2-3 days? Will the growler I buy there have a simple cap or something else?

    Thanks

Simple top - yes ... Best for keeping it fresh, is don't let it move around much and screw the top on as tight as you can. Once you've opened it, you've got a day (maybe 2) before you lose your carbonation and are tasting something other than what you've purchased. Unopened, a well filled and tightly sealed growler will last a good while. Enjoy your first one!

if you mean "what should i do to make sure it's still good when i get around to drinking it 3 days later?" the best answer is "ask them to do a CO2 purge when they fill the growler." can also tape the cap shut, but the purge is the major thing.

if you mean "what should i do to keep the beer fresh after i open it?" just recap and refrigerate immediately after you pour, but really don't worry about it. maybe it will be slightly less carbed and slightly worse the next day, but it shouldn't be a big deal. if you end up unsatisfied with how it lasts, be more fastidious next time and/or share the growler and kill it the first time you open it. (or be like me and drink it over a long period of time the same day)

Sorry to be naive, but didn't realize nebco co2 purges. Is that true or were you talking about growler fills more generally?

could have swore they purge if you ask for it. if that's my brain acting up, my apologies.

i have never seen them purge and did not know they had the ability to. perhaps i will ask next time i'm there and it's not busy?

They don't purge normally, and I've never bothered to ask, but they certainly have the capability and I don't see why they'd say no - at least as long as you ask nicely and it isn't insanely busy.

Like I said, I've never bothered to ask for a purge, and I've never had an oxidized NEBCO growler out of dozens I've consumed over the years. It makes sense, since if you cap on foam (which means the growler contains nothing but liquid and co2-filled bubbles) there shouldn't be any difference between a growler that previously contained air or one that was purged; regardless of what gas starts in there, it all gets entirely replaced with the same beer/foam.

Purging-specific issues aside, NEBCO is a big reason I'm not too fastidious about growler-filling procedures: they do pretty much everything wrong according to best growler practices (i.e., not counter-pressure, not purged, not even filled from the bottom through a tube - just poured right from the tap down the side of the glass) and yet I've never had a flat, oxidized, or otherwise spoiled-tasting growler of their beer - and I've kept some for multiple weeks before opening them.

Cap on foam, seal tightly, refrigerate, and enjoy. Simple as that.

Wasn't suggesting you were wrong, was just curious. Thanks for the informative responses all. I absolutely agree that I've never had a flat growler either, but do have some trading partners I know that would love some NEBCO fills, and I'd prefer a purge if shipping.

If you have regular trading partners, I'd suggest investing in a couple flip-top German-style growlers to send back and forth. I've never had even a hint of a leakage issue with them, and even the most tightly-taped screwcap worries me when shipping.

Interesting, I've got a couple of those but have been reluctant to bring them to NEBCO for fear they don't fit well under the taps. Maybe I misunderstood the kinds of growlers that they have trouble filling. I know they are usually kind enough to fill any type, but obviously would prefer to make it easier on them and not have beer spilled for no good reason.

They've never had a problem with my 2-liter, but the 1-liter and 750ml swingtops are rough because of the combination of height and a narrow neck.
