It wasnt that crowded. It was more like a normal weekend night than monks back room. I was late and got a seat at the bar pretty easily.

Agreed. Everyone I knew managed to get pours of everything they wanted to try. It helped that no one was trying to win at the event and get growler pours early before people had a decent shot at trying the rarer stuff.

It may have thinned out by then...but when I got there, right off the bat, it was crowded. Especially since everyone at that point needs a drink, and they're all huddled around the same spot. We were only there for an hour and a half or 2.

What's the point of this discussion? Oh, right! Philly Beer Week!

I'm looking forward to it as I do every year. Last year I had a great time checking out the PA beer tasting at the Boilermaker and the Mikkeller tap takeover at the Farmers Cabinet, both on the first night of beer week. After dinner I hopped over to Chris' to play with the Hoppin' John Orchestra (the big band that plays Brewers Plate every year). Quite a fun night!

As luck would have it, HJO is playing at Chris' again on opening night so I may just hop around some center city spots before the gig as I did last year. Anybody notice anything of particular interest?

Oh...so I was shit faced upon arrival huh? LOL Too funny. I hadn't had a beer that day, drove into the city, had two beers the entire time I was there...and I was crushed. Amazing.

Really it's immaterial. I don't really care what impression you took away. But your observations are off.

Definitely a great place to visit and my favorite bar, but they don't do Beer Week (or at least haven't in the past, not sure if their plans will change this year) so you won't see them on the PBW events list. But I'd still keep an eye on the tap list because it's a great bar even without events.

Maybe we are in the minority, but I'm the same way. I've been to many "meet the brewer" events and at most I've gotten a few minutes of conversation which basically amounted to various ways of saying "you make great beer" and them replying "thanks man, appreciate it." .

I doubt if their plans will change. They did PBW the first year, but Jeff told me what the organizers were charging to participate in subsequent PBW's, and he indicated he wanted no part of it. I don't blame him, frankly. TJ's does well enough without participating in PBW, and a lot of folks head over there during PBW anyway, just assuming he'll be doing something special druing PBW. So he essentially reaps the benefit of PBW, without having to pay what sounded to me like a pretty exhorbitant fee to be a PBW event destination.

Don't mean to get the middle of this, but I would make an observation. I went to the Bella Vista tap takeover 2 years ago at Devil's Den, and have to say my experience was pretty similar to what Retail1LO describes. I got there around a half hour before the event start time, and it was already an absolute madhouse. Service was very, very slow, and I was not happy (you can read my DD review if anyone wants the details). The place was way more crowded than I was expecting. That's part of the reason I didn't go to last year's event, even though the tap list sounded as if it would be amazing (again).

However, I've kind of come full circle on my original opinion. I literally drove by the Troegs event at Kite and Key last year without stopping, given the unbelievable size of the crowd. I figured the Funky Buddha event at Capone's would be even worse, so I got there more than an hour before tap time, just to make sure I got a spot at the bar. By the time the event started, it was standing room only and two deep at the bar. The PtE event at Teresa's Next Door was every bit as crazy, as I pretty much knew it would be (but with $2 glasses of elder, I just couldn't stay away).

I think this is just the way it is now for the more popular PBW events (the DD event definitely qualifies as one of the better and more popular PBW events). I don't think there's anything that can be done about it, and if one plans to avoid the events where you know there will be a "shit storm" of crowd activity, I'm not sure what that leaves. My impression is that the events you know will be super popular (the ballast point and HF events always seem to get huge crowds, as do the FW, RR, Bell's and Founders events), it's either get there at least an hour early or be prepared to deal with a huge crowd and often times lengthy waits at the bar. So while I sympathize with Retail1LO's experience, I'm not sure what there is that can be done about it. PBW just gets more popular every year, and every year the crowds get larger and larger and larger.

Uh, yeah, I was with Hayden (Retail1LO) the entire time. (Also, we took the train into the city, dipshit). It was hot as a motherfuck and we split four beers total, so we each had two. So Lauren, keep making your stupid comments and keep the pissing match with him going but you're dead wrong on this one.

Philly Soap Opera!!! The Pennsylvanians. I was thinking about taking the 77 north to the Ohio trnpk over to the Pennsylvania border through the PA trnpk then slide my way into Harrisburg and take a left to Lancaster to totally overtake the Philly area before Stewart gets home.

Anyways, I hope I get to meet some of you! As much as this thread was taken on a detour it was definitely interesting to read. I'll probably be wearing a Hoppin Frog shirt 1 of the days. I actually decided to not go to Opening Tap in favor of the Bella Vista Takeover at Devil's Den. Maybe I shouldn't. I rather drink more decent beer than little great beer.

Can you all please stop squabbling over who was drunker than whom, who was sweatier than whom, and who's a bigger liar than whom? Perhaps you two can start a new thread with votes at the top so we can all weigh in.

I'd like to get back to discussing Philly Beer Week, please. Thank you.

I could be wrong but I can't remember any events last year that week. I know he had a "Scraps" event two years ago that was killer but was a few weeks after. Again, definitely worth checking out with or without events.

i think my favorite PBW story of last year was probably the bartender at jose pistola's literally jumping over the bar to go outside and tell the work crew just outside that they could not, under any circumstances, shut the entire block's power off during their HF event

You know a month in advance what you'll be wearing?

I knew a lot of BA's were OCD tickers, geeks, snobs, liars, pissing contestants and drunkards but this is a new low.

I said I'll probably be wearing it. Implying I'm a huge hoppin frog fan, so you should look for the huge hoppin frog fan. What's wrong with wanting to represent my local brewery since I'm 9 hours from Philly? Clearly I know what I'm going to wear every day for the rest of my life... Lol.

You're probably better off hitting individual events opposed to the Opening Tap, which will probably attract more tourists and people from out of the area who want to casually try a bunch of beers at once. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's just a different scene/quality from what you get at the niche events.

The Bella Vista event at DD will be super crowded, but they always have a handful of things worth fighting the crowd for...plus once you're tired of that you could walk to another event at one of the other bars in the area. This is the beauty of PBW - if something is a total mobscene you can always try another spot.
