Perhaps the most shocking thing is not a single mention of Fat Tire.

USAToday and lazy being used in the same sentence?

    Shocker!

What the hell does this mean?

Pennsylvania once had over 360 breweries at one time in the Pre-Pro era (it had always been among the states with the most breweries since the beginning of the US).

Perhaps they meant the breweries that dated from the era before Prohibition that were still in business at the start of the "Craft" era? But "6" would even be wrong for that figure - probably closer to 12 - 14 in the late 1970's.

I'm just shocked. Another article from a mass media publication with superficial and inaccurate information on craft beer! *Facepalm*

"OK, people. Everyone's doing articles on those girly beers. Anyone want the piece?"
"I'll write it. I've tried all of them: Shock Top, Blue Moon, Black Crown. Had that new Third Shift the other evening. Whoa! Waaay bitter!"

The thing about articles and garbage like this is they're all made for mindless page clicks. There's no substance.

I agree, really fucking lazy. However, I found it interesting to see just how many craft breweries there were in each of those states (of course a little googling would have probably given a list of the total number of breweries in all 50 states).

Ho Hum. Just another subjective article by a mainstream media outlet slapped together so they can claim they're on top of new developments.

Something tells me these figures are off though...
the oregon brewers guild lists 136 for them, so there is a deficit of 12 already there.
wikipedia lists 139 for colorado. 9 there.

Yeah, found their source. they are using 2011 numbers from the brewers association. man these numbers are much different after 2 years.

The BA usually releases the numbers for the previous year around May/June timeframe. So 2012 will be out soon. 2011 was the best they had, though outdated. Heck, the 2012 numbers will be outdated when released.

Once again: lazy and poorly researched. This guy seems like he googled "craft beer" and went with whatever the first page of responses happened to say. Also: Golden Monkey and Hop Devil? Those were the best examples he could spit out? For shame, USA Today.

I'll bet engineers aren't super thrilled with Popular Mechanics either. The article seemed to advocate for beer at least at some level.

No way Michigan is 5th. I have a difficult time imagining them as low as 3rd.

5th on the number of breweries in the 2011 BA report, it was an accurate snapshot. More breweries now in MI, but other states have been growing too.
