So a beer that would never get distributed otherwise being sold via a RS is snobbery?

Rather a beer that would have gotten distributed anyway now is reserved for a select few.

This part is not directed at you but rather the group. Would ANY of you patronize a liquor store that ONLY had lists for limited beer? I can't count the number of comments about people whining about Specs A or Total Wine Z pre selling their case leaving someone who actually takes off work, gets to a store right when it opens, and still misses out because they don't know the guy.

I don't care if you can't take off work to nab a bottle of something but spend X amount of dollars at a store. Quit your job and sling drinks like I did. Life is about choice, I made mine to be a life centered around everything beer. Lobby for changes to our state laws. Do something other than show up here and act entitled.

Unfortunately, it's already like that in Texas, and, to my knowledge, there are no exclusive societies to any breweries.

I understand where you're coming from and all but I disagree.

Why will we accept the stores holding a breweries beer hostage on special releases but we will not allow a brewery to release it any fashion that they want to? You and I are are "in" with people at certain stores that will hold beer for us or give it to us when it's in the back. Does that make us entitled? The store is in the wrong in my eyes because they reselling a resold product, 3 tiers. You and I should theoretically stop shopping at these places because whether we like it or not we are receiving preferential treatment and it's wrong. We don't because we want the product and if we don't buy it someone else will come along and buy it. I've seen countless people come up and ask for a beer and be told they were out while I'm standing with it in my hands feeling like an awkward asshole.

When it's in the brewery's hands and they're selling their product, to me they can sell it however they see fit.

Holy crap I agree with Matt on something! :stuck_out_tongue:

Preferential treatment is what makes the beer geek world work right now, like it or not. We all know "a guy" or get hooked up by a friend of a friend, etc. I'm going to be out of town most of this week, and will be asking "my guy" to hold a Parabola for me if it comes in while I'm gone, which he likely will since I spend a shit-ton of money at his store.

Reserve societies just bring it out into the open - I give you my $, you guarantee my beer, and I dont need to use "my guy" any more to get those beers. I would get it one way or the other, and both would be preferential treatment.

I like your point. Honestly it's a rare occasion that something gets held for me. That said I try to be a cool guy. Get to know everyone's name, spend time chatting with employees at slow times, smile, say thank you a lot. Often times this buys me a phone call that it's arrived or a heads up the day before its supposed to be on its way. But I digress.

And perhaps entitlement is the word that is probably hardest to define. Honestly I like the Bruery's beer a whole hell of a lot. I considered joining or splitting only because we cannot get those beers in TX.

Considering JK doesn't have as many hurdles shipping beer elsewhere as they have shipping it locally I think it's not hypocritical to suggest that a similar business model with JK is both unnecessary and would only lead to less people in TX actually drinking their beer? I would contend that with the relative ease with which other states will accept beer from TX that JK could perhaps focus on building relationships with quality businesses in those states for select distribution (something they already do). If image is important I'd rather support a proletariat than an aristocrat.

Perhaps the support for this "I can avoid the hassle by tossing money at it" has as much to do with the personal politics at play in this wonderful state of TX. I can't wait to see the kids of parents who think tossing $ at their kids problems makes it go away (oh wait I worked at TCU..nevermind)

The whole thing that started this discussion was Jeff saying that if the laws changed, they could potentially set-up a system like that, and asked for thoughts on the matter.

That said, those hurdles would hopefully be knocked out of the way and not something to worry about. They should be out of the way regardless of RS-style club or not.

Yeah I understand that point. I was just perhaps suggesting a counter point to that and/or alternative use of their time in large part because I know they will actually read it.

I mean they have limited time so for example I'd hate to have them sacrifice the ability to actively respond and lead discussion here for the sole purpose of creating an alternate business model. Maybe it's not that hard, maybe it is. I'd rather them drop experimental bombs on their tours every weekend for a specific example of a "better" use of these small batches.

I'd just hate for JK to pigeon hole themselves on a "fad" when they could stay unique.

That's a poor assumption to make. How would they distribute a costly, tiny batch in a way that would guarantee you your "fair share"?

People whine about JK prices as it is; what kind of wailing do you think would happen if they sold a bottle for $30 through distribution? People won't give a shit how time-intensive or expensive it was for JK to produce. Hell, they don't right now.

The people that would find it valuable are the people that would buy into a RS.

Even at the theoretical $300 a year, it's not expensive at all. $25 a month. How much do you spend on beer a month?

I have no issues with the cost of a membership as previous posts have indicated. And heck if said membership was exclusively for people in Texas (id even be fine if they said it was Austin and SA signups only) then I'd be willing to entertain to idea. Just something doesn't seem right..too bandwagon for JK to do. Gimicky even.

I really think the devil would be in the details. Perhaps sign ups would have to be done in person theoretically on JK's anniversary after legislation is passed permitting this activity. Do I think they need this, no. Could it be done tactfully to further support the local community, yes.
