Like the automakers and banks got when they tanked. Get it?

    I would add :
    5. They're weary of using anything other than European hops. Others are used, but overly judiciously, imho.

Uh ok... you are saying they are on the verge of failure and need a bailout like the banks and car makers? They are obviously too big to fail and the government would have no problem bailing out a beer company......Brilliant....

I don't know if a post could be any more unfounded or idiotic. Since their sales decreased slightly your conclusion is they are looking for a government handout? Unbelievable.

Not a handout, but BBC would be among the biggest "winners" as far as their Federal Excise Tax bill goes, if the Brewers Association-backed so-called "Small BREW Act" is passed:

I always thought they brewed wayyyy too many beers just because they could. If they focused on quality over quantity they would be in better shape but they choose to focus on quantity over quality.

A sales decline was bound to happen. After all, some craft breweries actually fail altogether. And, with constant growth, you get a bubble and sooner or later the bubble bursts.

And I was just kidding [no pun intended]. Being a lifelong cynic, I wonder whether BBC could be trying to deflate their numbers so that they would fit under the "Small BREW Act".

Yeah... that has nothing to do with their sales decline whatsoever.

I do enjoy some Sam Adams but they should focus their business on beers for beer drinkers instead of drawing in malternative drinkers with fruity and flavored beers. That stuff has a place but it should be spun off like the cider business. Market to moms and college girls like Lime a rita

I don't think a whole lot of their beers and to say that they will increase prices does not bode well for me buying anything from them.

This thread has turned into another referendum on Jim Koch and Sam Adams, kind of like the 'hop bomb' thread. I get it. Some people see Sam Adams as the 'next thing to BMC' - a sell out public company who advertises on national TV. There's just nothing cool about liking either one of them. I'm guessing this tends to be younger guys who got into craft brewing after SA was well established and seemed to be everywhere. I'm in the camp that remembers what a wasteland it used to be and respects Koch for making great beer for a long time (and BTW, inventing barrel aging and created the first beer above 14% ABV). They are never going to get much respect from the BA population for their regulars because they're not interesting enough and when they do make something more extreme, they get judged down because it's from Sam Adams (except for Utopia, which I suppose is so extreme it's hard to compare it to anything else).

I just wish folks would stop using 'quality' to denegrate their beer. You might not like their styles and you're free to hate their advertising and everything else about Jim Koch, but to say all their beers suck is just ridiculous.

I personally think that NB brews better beers than SA. I tend to drink A LOT more NB beers than SA, NB's 1554 and Abbey, in particular, but Fat Tire is one of my go-to restaurant beers, when i'm at a restaurant that's not beer savy.

Lots of self proclaimed experts here. Moral of the story is they have added diversified lines to maintain their sales level if there was a dip in beer sale (which there was). Say what you want, but that is a great way to run a business.

I think folks here are upset because they don't bottle hops right from the branch like smaller operations like to do. Newsflash: BA's make up less than 0.001% of the beer drinking market.

Perhaps I'm missing some more of that sarcasm  , but their current barrelage is already well below the limit of the proposed "Small BREW Act" - 2.7m bbl for 2012 vs. the act's new "small" definition of under 6m bbl/yr. for the new reduced rates. That's one reason why the Beer Institute (the "Big Brewers" group) recently came out against it, since it's a windfall for a few brewers - Pabst, Yuengling and BBC - which are now in-between 2 and 6 million barrels a year.

"“We can’t support a policy that amounts to a giveaway to a handful of brewers that each are worth more than a billion dollars.” --- Beer Institute Spokesperson.

The Brewers Association's figures, OTOH, do subtract BBC's FMB and Cider totals and list their "craft beer" barrelage at around 2.2 million barrels for 2012 IIRC.

The more people claim they won't buy any BBC products all I can think i that there will be more Cream Stout, Chocolate Cherry Bock, Old Fezziwig, and other favorites for the rest of us that do. Works for me.
