Not me anyways. Seeing as I have had it a few times in the past it wasn't worth fighting everyone else for a brick. Much less paying the almost $90 for it.

Anywhere from $10 - $20. I bought two cases when I went to Belgium and my all-in cost per bottle (not including the plane ticket) was about $10. I also purchased a Westy brick which makes each bottle about $15 (assuming the tasting glasses are worthless). And I've also purchased a few bottles online from some Belgian websites and I pay around $20 per bottle all-in cost.

I'd say it's worth $20 to try it once, after that you'll know what it's worth to you, maybe $20, maybe $10, maybe not even... tree-fidy.

wow, wish I could still find them! Do you think they will make it a yearly release?

I'd say $20, maybe $25. Not more than that. That's only because I've never tried it. I would never consider paying that much a second time, even if I ended up thinking it was the greatest beer in the world.

It was a one time thing. It was to raise money for repairs to the monastery. So unless they need more money to do repairs in the future, I don't see this happening again anytime soon.

If it were on the shelf I wouldn't pay more than $15 for it, $20 at a bar.

Yeah, I knew that. Those are long gone, though, so given the timing of this thread I believe it was intended to be hypothetical. I would have paid $85 for a sixer and a glass.

$10-15 if I could get it easily. Getting it online with shipping though will cost more like $20 which is also doable as a treat from time to time

Honestly, like many rare beers it comes down to supply and demand. It's tough to get, and that increases its value. So does the shipping charge from Europe.

A year or so ago some friends and I did a blind tasting and rating of all the Trappists ales we could find. Orval, Chimay Red, Blue, and Gold, Rochefort 6, 8, 10, Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel, Achel Brun 8 and 9.5, La Trappe Tripel and Quad, and Westy 8 and 10.

I scored La Trappe Quad number 1 and Rochefort 10 number 2. Westy 12 was 3, which surprised me. Westy 12 never did better than second place, and some guys put it fourth or fifth.

There may have been unintentional bias, because Orval and Chimay are so easy to pick out. And I'm not a huge fan of Westmalle, but others scored it high.

Westvleteren is a great beer, worth seeking out. But other Trappists, and other Belgians, are better in this BA's opinion.

I would spend $20 with shipping just so I can get this white whale crossed off my beer-bucket list

If you are told you are drinking something well renowned/expensive/exclusive then it will taste better based on that knowledge, our brains are just silly like that. Westy is world class no doubt and worth trying even at the price, but im sure a blind taste test would surprise alot of people

Having had it (it was really really good) I think the hype is just, well....hype at the end of the day. It's all about availability and the fact that monks brew it. There is definitely the mystique factor going on. I really doubt though that it would be placed on such a high pedestal if you could walk into Bevmo, and buy a 4pk.

Again though, it's an awesome quad, but I wouldn't pay more than around 7 dollars (cost of St. Bernardus here)

I have had it twice. Once from the brick, and i ordered from some guy outside of ebay online which cost me $25 a bottle (that included shipping). Personally, I think it blows St. Bernardus and Rochefort (they are amazing brews too) out of the water and wasn't too disappointed in the price I paid. For me, it lives up to the hype. Will I seek out more in 5 years when mine are gone? Definitely...

Is it hypothetical? I was really going to give the Loch Ness Monster three-fiddy. Even though I shouldn't ...

I'd pay up to $1000 dlls for a 12 oz bottle. Just so long as this is only hypothetical.

If I were buying it, probably $10-15 would be my limit for a fresh one. Anything more and I'd just go with Rochefort 10, which is just as good to me and available at $7-8 a bottle. If it were already aged a few years, I'd go up to $25 maybe. I mean, I've paid double digits for bottles of beer that I didn't enjoy as much as Westy12 in bars and such, so I couldn't justify not paying the same price for one of the best beers made.

If I were selling, I probably wouldn't do so for under $50. They are hard to come by, so I'm only going to sell if there is a real incentive to. I'd much prefer to just crack one open and share with a friend who could enjoy it (or trade it, or give to a friend whom I was in 'beer debt' to). Sharing a beer with a friend whom otherwise would never had the opportunity to taste it is a pretty cool experience, and definitely not worth losing for anything under $50 :stuck_out_tongue: I also wouldn't sell any that I personally got from the brewery as I respect the monks and would honor the agreement they make with sellers not to resell it.
