I only recently got into trading about three weeks ago and I am shipping out my sixth trade today. It got me thinking...how many is "normal"? And what's the best way you've found to "pace" yourself? Only go for limited release stuff? Only locals?

    Thanks!

Its addicting isn't it? :-) I have sent out as many a 13 boxes in 1 week some with as many as 30 beers + extras. And I have no idea what the norm is but keeping track of all of them is tough! And I haven't done that one again. It can be a logistical nightmare I had to do a spreadsheet of coming in and going out boxes! Usually I ship 2-3 a week or so........ I haven't learned to pace myself yet either. I just see a posting that interests me on a beer I'd like to try and reply if they get back to me cool if not moving right along.

Anywhere from 0 to 5 in a given month. When I started my new job I went on a bit of a trading binge and sent out a lot of boxes in the first couple months. For the most part I just trade with my four regular trading partners anymore, or do in-person trades at releases or when I'm traveling.

I think most people start out in a bit of a mad rush to do as many trades as possible. Unfortunately this has also gotten a lot of people in over their heads in the past, and lead to many a bad trader.

You'll quickly find that you are getting more beer than you can reasonably consume, and that's before you even get into all the new releases you want to purchase for yourself. At some point you'll naturally decide to scale back based on seeing the giant piles of beer in your house.

Nowadays I probably average a trade every couple of weeks, and I like to always be in an active BIF, because I love BIFs. I feel like I've tried a "who's who" of locals around the country, so now I really just trade for favorites, occasional limited releases, or with past partners. I no longer have an urge to jump on every ISO/FT that looked halfway interesting just because I can.

I have one really good trading partner where it's to the point, we're sending each other a box at least once a month or even twice a month. Aside from that, I'll get in on the occasional BIF if it looks interesting or seek out some beers I want. I trade nothing like I did when I first started though. It's very easy to get carried away, and then realize how much money you're spending on beer and shipping. It adds up fast.

Yeah, my wife is a little on the annoyed side, so I have a built in way to pace myself I 'spose.

I recently started trading as well. I have been really addicted to it but have been able to slow down a bit since I have been able to get a lot of the beers i have wanted to try, now its trying to get beers that are my "whales" so the trading has slowed down a bit. But it sure is fun. Sending out two more boxes today

When it rains it pours. I seem to go a week or two with nothing and then I'm shipping out four at a time.

How much are you paying for shipping on each box? I traded once, and it cost about $22 to ship one box with eight 12oz bottles. I just found it too expensive.

So far all of my shipping costs per box have been between $15-$20, which is pretty high. Most people that trade open their own accounts with FedEx/UPS, weigh and print their labels from home and "estimate" the weight on their shipments low to save money. It's dishonest and against the rules but then again so is shipping beer in the first place.

Set up a fedex account it does give you a bit of a discount. But I ship at work and its WAY cheaper!
24lb box to texas 9.32! :-) just a employee perk? Sent 2 boxes to alabama last week same place $25ish?

I started trading about 2 weeks ago. I have shipped out 16 packages in the last 9 days. I live in Portland and I decided to start trading right when Upright Blend Love and Cascade Blueberry came out. I picked up 2 cases of Blend, 1.5 cases of Blueberry and had a case of Fantasia that I had lying around. I put together probably way too many trades at once but for just starting out, I ended up getting about 90% of all the beers I have ever wanted to try. Not sure what the FedEx bill is just yet but I have underestimated weights of my pacakages just to have them all corrected by FedEx so it probably won't be pretty. Looking forward to the massive picture of my huge haul of 16 trades next week. Should be about 80 beers total plus extras. Hopefully I let my wallet relax a bit after but it was quite addicting having cases of newly released beer that others wanted. Was quite unproductive at work somedays lol.

I travel a lot for work, but if I only have a little time between trips I'll try to set up about a reasonable 1-2 billion trades. That way while I'm home, I spend the entire time packing boxes, sending boxes, and exchanging information and tracking numbers. That way, when I get back from the next trip, I have a billion or two boxes to open and it's awesome. I try to trade only for beers that can age when I do it this way, because I could be gone for months at a time

If I'm home for an extended period of time, which happens occasionally, I'll do about 2-3 a month, mostly for limited release stuff, but 90% of the time expanding to include a bunch of locals. That's when I do my IPA/IIPA trading, since I can drink them as I get them.

Sometimes I get requests from previous trading partners, and I always try to fulfill them though sometimes I can't, but I usually ask them to wait to send me stuff until I'm available. This method works for me, and I am always a happy trader.

I'm my prime, I did maybe 6-8 per month. Now I do about 1-2 per month since I'm busy with school. Gotta get those hyped up new releases though.

i was doing 4-5 per month maybe more for a while. now i do 1 or 2, sometimes none. there's too many beers that are available here for me to spend so much money chasing down other beers from around the country.
