I have been drinking nothing but Genny or 'Gansett and a few Saranacs for a few weeks as a spending restraint.

Today at work I thought: "I need to drink a good beer tonight" so I bought a six pack of Honker's Ale.

my oh, my but that first sip was heavenly. Honker's has never tasted so good. I feel like my taste buds suddenly came to life. I have a new found appreciation for good beer.

I know I can drink the cheap stuff but I am happy to drink something so tasty. if anyone is bored with craft beer, switch to adjunct lagers until you cannot stand it and then go get some good beer. you'll be amazed at how good it tastes.

What's confusing? The OP likes Honkers Ale a lot and so do I.

I think I'd like the saranac more. And I feel I need to do the same thing soon, my palate is wrecked, fubar. Probably because I've had over 300 different beers since Jan 21st, I don't know if I'm ashamed or impressed.

It works even better if you dont drink anything at all for a month or so, then pop open a nice bottle. "Oh, so this is why I obsess over this stuff? Seems about right."

I picked up a 12 pack of Saranac from Southtown Beverage for $ 7.99.

Yes. Better to drink nothing than drink something boring.

Going to the liquor store is kinda a trek and throwing down $40+ is something I do rarely for alcohol, so I can see where OP is coming from. Although I can't honestly say that I can't I least get Sierra Nevada at the local gas station on my corner, but tis true for any other craft brew.

The Saranac 2013 Summer mix pack is the best one they have put out. Yes its still not the highest level of craft beer around but I feel they keep on improving their product. Its got the White Ipa in there and plus 2 new beers (Wild Hop Pils and Session Ale) and they are worth a try IMO. I'll go as far to say that I prefer their variety 12 packs over Sam Adams variety packs because they dont stick their version of Boston Lager into every one. Probably because they dont have a flagship like that but it still better not to have the same beer in every pack.

I love big, hoppy ales that you can smell 50 yards away, but I have to say, it's fun to take a break every now and then. This is the perfect time of year to do it too. A bottle of cheap lager tastes pretty good when it's hot and sunny out. Then, after a week or two, you go back to a nice hoppy ale and life is great. That being said, there are relatively cheap summer-time lagers out there that are craft brewed and it's nice to support those folks when you're resting the palate!

That is what I bought. The Hefe was pretty good, the Blueberry was, meh... and the rest was decent. I always want to like Saranac, after all Saranac Pale Ale and Blackforest were my gateway beers to American craft but none of the many Saranac beers I have tried over the years blew my doors off. I don't think there is any comparison between Saranac and Goose Island.
