Did you get a chance to try the Stone/Iron Fist/Ken Schmidt mint chocolate imperial stout? Not sure if it's still around anywhere, but it is a well done mint chocolate stout and most certainly worth a try

5 years ago. Good grief. So all this suspicion about Shipyard is based on an anonymous blog post from over 5 years ago? Really, people.

Yeah, I mean they rush the beer to the bottle. Not the bottling process is flawed.

Ringwood is a perfectly fine yeast. It produces more diacetyl than other strains, but that does not mean that you can't make clean beer with it by taking the time at the end of fermentation to diacetyl-rest. Just ask the brewers at Dogfish Head. Ringwood is their house yeast. When's the last time you smelled/tasted diacetyl a la Shipyard in a DFH beer? Sebago Brewing up here in Portland made a small beer with Ringwood yeast (directly from Shipyard, mind you) last year and it had virtually no detectable diacetyl. Shipyard's problem is not Ringwood. The problem is the bad yeast handling and fermentation practices inherent in the Peter Austin/Alan Pugsley brewing philosophy.

The proof that Shipyard doesn't properly diacetyl-rest is in the beer. The more you learn about brewing, fermentation and off-flavors, the more you come to realize that the amount of VDK in Shipyard beer is unacceptable, especially in Export. Maybe some people like that buttery flavor or are part of the population that isn't sensitive to diacetyl. For me, it's a major flaw.

Thank you! The Austin/Pugsley brewing method is garbage.

I still can't get over how many people really like Pumpkinhead, they buy it by the case sometimes. Absolutely insane. I tried it was thought it was the worst pumpkin beer out there, considering the much better options. My BMC friends rave about shipyards flavored beers. I just don't get it.

I know a former brewer at Shipyard, and many other brewers in town.

It seems others have posted a similar response from other BMC friends. I found it totally bland and bordering on something with just pumpkin flavoring but otherwise a Miller Lite. Perhaps that is their market. It must be working--just not for me.

Some of you seem a little too worked up over Shipyard's brews. I almost never drink their beer except when visiting Maine but really, I don't get the level of hate here.

Was handed a Chamberlain Pale Ale after hiking the Mahoosac trail on a humid day, one of the most memorable beers I've ever had and I'd be willing to bet a large amount of people on this site would've enjoyed it too...especially if they tasted it blind.

Split a bottle with a few at work, reminds me of a jolly rancher candy. No way I could finish an entire bottle.

Are people really worked up? Why is it hate? Their beer ranges from OK to offensive. The majority of users of this site don't like what they make. That isn't hate. That's knowing what is and isn't good beer.

Yeah, My observation is that some of the posts are a little over the top. There, is that better than "hate"?

Actually, the posts suggest many here hate their beers, so I think I'll stick with what I posted. I'm not sure what your point was.
