This dude has 1100 bottles! WTF? If each one of those beers cost $10, that's like $11k (awesome math skills I have).

Is that a Mikkeller BA X he's holding in that one picture? There were only 40 bottles of that even made.

As interesting as this is, I think it gets to be excessive with beer. I would love to have an enormous wine cellar (sorry if I'm preaching to the wrong choir) but I would never drink all of that beer on my own. Some of it would either go bad or just get worse over time. If there's a bunch of people drinking it weekly then I could see, but I just think that's alot.

Having said that, I'm sure it would be worth alot if we went by eBay prices (even though you can't buy on eBay anymore).

This. of all thos brews probably less than half have any value. if that guy drinks one bottle a day it will take over 3 years to turn over his cellar. Lots of brews would not like that

The middle picture at the top is a case of Triple Bock. Take that for what it is.

Looks like a sweet cellar, and seems he has the right attitude about sharing it with friends. Now if only I was his friend...

As alot of the SE Mich BAs can attest to, this is the year of drinking through the cellar. I'm not a fan of hoarding or having too many bottles, and I think I hit that this past year so I am rolling through as much as I can.

I'm currently replacing most of the bottles in my cellar with lambics so I don't need to be on a 3 year cycle.

I'm sick of having bad 3 year old stouts, barleywines, american sours, and belgian style quads. I'll still maintain a formitable cellar, but it will be lambics for aging.

For everything else, I will drink fresh and drink local.

Looks like Walt from RateBeer. I remember seeing pics of his cellar from back in the day (before his current setup) and he had and still has lots of gems in there. Just that pic with all the older Russian Rivers, Old Cuvee de Tomme, Wooden Hell in the background....damn! Would love to see what other goodies he has laying around!

not goes bad, but most beer does not improve with age. You'r beer may still be drinkable after 3 years but it might not taste as good as it did at 1 year or fresh

I think it's just a matter of a lot of newer drinkers getting to that same point of "maturity" at around the same date. I'm moving to a tiny apartment in a few months, and it's forcing me to get down to about a case of beer in the "cellar" -- honestly, it's the best thing that could have happened. I've enjoyed the hell out of my FW 15, Sucaba, KBS, etc.

As others have said, it's mostly just that they don't get much better and potentially goes significantly downhill. For example...I've aged beer so it loses some of it's hotness. And then drank it and found that the hotness faded, but a metalic note appeared (for example). So, was it worth it? For me...nope...not any more.

And every once in a while, yes, they are bad. Sour, for example. Just muted and not worth drinking. I hate opening a bottle of beer and drainpouring it as a result of cellaring.

For me, I've lost more than i've gained out of cellaring most styles of beer.

What's amazing to me is how much of a minority opinion this is. Whenever I post something to this effect on reddit I get downvoted into oblivion. I'm sure if BA had downvotes it'd happen here too. There's just this hivemind around the idea "CELLAR ALL THE THINGS!!!" No. Don't cellar all the things.

I'm glad I'll never be that obsessed. I would rather have 10k cash than all that beer.

Because what we're talking about directly contradicts people's desire to hoard. If they don't cellar it, how can they have one available to trade? That's one thing that I realized when I stopped cellaring many of those beers.... It was going to be tougher to trade without an arsinal of BCB?S or BA Abraxas or whatever in my cellar.

Also, if I don't hoard them, how can I have them whenever I want? I want to be able to drink _____ whenever I want. So I should keep a bunch of it.

In many cases, it's not cellaring, it's stockpiling. I was cellaring lambics...i was stockpiling everything else. I just didn't realize it.

I can't say i'm perfect at it yet. I still have a lot of those types of beers in my cellar at the moment. But only because it takes time to break out of the pattern (and no to whoever asks...i will not send my 'old beer' to you for proper disposal).

That cellar is worth one hell of a lot more than 10k. The Wooden Hell alone would probably get you like 2k at auction.
I'm not quite to the "only lambic" stage, though I'm definitely at "mostly lambic".
