    Maybe this has been posted before. Part of my job is looking for equipment. Came across this video of Russian River's bottling operation while looking for small scale bottle fillers. It has a little more detail than the typical clip. I hear this Pliny stuff is a pretty good beer...

    Obviously the beer is amazing, but I am even more amazed by the engineering.. Beautiful.

    Firstly, thanks to the OP for the video!

    There is also a video of the GAI 3003A BIER bottling system at Marble Brewery (available on YouTube). That video has text which states:

    “Video of the GAI 3003A beer bottling machine at Marble Brewery in Albuquerque, NM. Highest quality beer bottling machine on the market today. Has the lowest oxygen pick-ups of any beer bottling machine in the world making for a great quality beer and longer shelf-life.”

    I was hoping during the Marble Brewery video they were going to quantify the amount of dissolved oxygen in the beer (usually measured in units of ppb (part per billion) or ml/12 ounce bottle) but no values were mentioned.

    I think it I great that Russian River took the steps to obtain a high quality bottling line. I have never had Pliny the Elder in bottle but I have had it many times of draft (Pliny the Elder is available on draft in the Philly area). Pliny the Elder is indeed an OUTSTANDING beer!

    I've worked in several food processing plants, and some of the machinery is amazing. Two things that struck me about this, that they labeled before filling, and hand packing the cases. I would have thought that the label would get wet and torn. And maybe the line isn't fast enough to need a caser. Cool video though.

    As a person who has tried desperately to remove a Pliny label, those fuckers do not come off.. They almost have a plastic coating.

    Thanks for posting.
    I work in a facility that bottles spirits. We use Krones fillers and up to speeds of 350bpm filling anything from 375mL flasks to 1.75L bottles.
    Our fillers use vacuum to achieve proper fill heights and at rate.

    First thing that came to mind for me too.
    I have to look at my Pliny at home. P/S (pressure sensitive) labelling is typically more plastic than paper. Easier to mfg and cut on the webbing. But P/S labels are more expensive than cold glue (with paper).

    Yeah - the labeling struck me as a different approach. We apply labels after filling, but we are filing at 180 F, then go through a tunnel chiller with the full bottles. We use Krones too and we're supposed to get to 350 BPM...sometimes we even make it :rolling_eyes: . The operation I am responsible for is pilot scale - this is right up our alley as far as concept. The speed - I wonder if it was slowed down for the video?

    Interesting to me was the "evacuation" step prior to liquid fill - will be looking more into that. Dissolved oxygen is the enemy - especially with hot filling.

    Jack - I passed over the Marble video, but will definitely go back and check that out. The manufacturer's website doesn't really give the information on dissolved oxygen - that seems it would be a great sales "hook" and readily available info.

    the guy at the end of the line can only work so fast. and the guy at the front can only load bottles so fast. I've worked that same type of machine for wine. It just goes and goes.

    I've heard that this is actually the only place that PtE is As fresh as it should be... once it leaves that room, it's fallen off and probably isn't worth the calories.

    Good point - I think the goal is probably bullet-proof reliability and managing cost/footprint of the overall installation so you don't need automated handling on either side. Speed costs money and when those thoroughbreds break down it isn't much fun.

    And I've done my share of hand-filling - the speed is totally deceptive. As you say - it don't stop!

    For sure! I have not found a good way to clean the adhesive off either. Cool shape of the bottle is less thrilling for bottling homebrewwith ugly exterior gunk.
