Getting off-topic, but the BBQ smoker at Sheffield's is the best upgrade ever to a bar in Chicago, at least that I'm aware of.

I always enjoy going to Goose Clybourn, and I've enjoyed their food on numerous occasions. Also, like many have stated, they always seem to have a good amount of pub exclusives, and sometimes good vintage bottles to pick from.

100% agree with this. Revolution has very mad cow available, so yeah.

If you goto GI, I suggest wriggleyville right now. The Gomez Is on tap there and worth the trip for that beer alone. Same food

This thread has taught me that brewpubs are only worth going to when you can tick wælzbrø for $9/3oz pour rather than going to have a good fresh beer on draught in a social place and eat a fine meal at the same time.

If you're in town and never been it's worth going... It's was Chicago craft before it was cool... Food is good beers non regular line up are worth trying... Revolution is good as well but like Nate said it's a shitshow on the weekends...

I suppose I'm just spoiled by all of the amazing gastro pub style food we have access to in the area.

Owen & Engine, Hopleaf, Rev's brewpub, Au Cheval, Lockdown (the list goes on) make GI's food look like Applebee's.

But I digress -- looks like us Chicagoans have successfully derailed another thread!

The only good thing about GI Clybourn is Binny's is across the street. Seriously I would go to Revolution and Half Acre before GI.

People are nuts, Goose Island has great food. Just because it isn't the Girl and the Goat type quality, doesn't mean it is bad... It's also pretty reasonably priced.

If you are really debating going to Goose and love good beer/food, then by all means stop by during your visit.

I think the same thing -- it may not be among the top ten of restaurant/pubs in the city, but I'd say it's at least 90% better than most bar food on the planet.

Most restaurants look good by that comparison. Hell, Little Cesar's looks good based on that standard

Some of the GI food is really good. Some if it is really mediocre. Some of it is really bad. It's hit or miss. You'll likely decent food if you stay away from anything too adventurous. It'll be a step above normal bar fare, but still in that family. It's not like Three Floyds, where the menu is an unexpected treat. But, there are beer bars in the city with better food (and a more consistent taplist to boot).

To be fair, I'm also in the minority about the quality of food at Haymarket, which I think is very oversold.

Count me in the group that thinks Goose's food has been going downhill. A couple years ago, it was great. For the past year (at least), it's been pretty inconsistent. The menu descriptions sound great, but what you get tends to disappoint. That said, there are a number of items that are always good, like the burgers and Sriracha wings. Weekend brunch tends to be pretty good, too. In other words, the typical bar food tends to be good, but that's no different from 25 other places. When you get to the more creative end of the menu, you're taking your chances.

As for the beer, they don't always have extreeeeeeme stuff on tap, but much of what they offer is either a new take on an old favorite or great for the style.

I don't think there is a single person is Chicago that legitimately prefers to eat at Haymarket. I always eat elsewhere before stopping there

When was the last time you had the black earth burger? Had one a month ago and it is still amazing.

Apparently they aren't as vegan friendly as they used to be, however.

I actually thought the food at Revolution was really good, the beers I tried kinda so so 'cept for the BA milk stout.

The brewpubs were not sold to InBev. They still make their own beer there which is not distributed. So it is worth checking out.

It really depends on how many places you are wanting to hit up. A good Chicago tour would include 3 Floyds, Revolution, Half Acre, Hopleaf, Map Room, Local Option, and the West Lake View Liquors.
