In the LA area, another one bites the dust...

To be fair, Westwood Brewing Company (or known to locals as BrewCo) hasn't brewed their own beer in over ten years. In the early 2000's, they hosted beer tastings and actually won medals for their brews. By 2002 or so, BJ's was making their beer for them. After that, they had the generic Firestone "house brews" wearing the Westwood Brewing Company label. They supplemented these relatively few offerings with draft selections from craft breweries like Stone mixed among the macros.

Still, it's the only place I know of in Westwood Village with a selection of decent brews.

Now I have no reason at all to go to that area.

Doesn't sound like the owner thought of it as a craft beer spot at all. If he had good taps, he might've found a way to stay in business by reaching the new crop of LA beer geeks.

It's true that it wasn't a primo craft beer spot (at least not during all of my shenanigans there - 2010-2011), but they always had some decent stuff on tap, Hennepin, Old Chub, various Stone and Bear Republic offerings, and Session, and it's one of the places I credit most for getting me into good beer. It's not that BrewCo was an amazing haven for craft beer, it's that it was so much better than everywhere else in Westwood that made it so appealing. It was there that I realized there were beers around that actually had an enjoyable flavor, and running through their tap list exposed me to a bunch of styles that I hadn't heard of before. It also didn't hurt that all the cocktails were $4.50 and came in pint glasses, and that we could always get a table. I'll pour some out for BrewCo tonight.

West Wood has been dying for years. The once really great night time spot for an outing is really pretty dead after a certain time. I'm not surprised by this in the least. Though I am surprised they were able to stay open this long. The scene there is just not happening and it's tucked away on the back end of the area anyway.

Damn! I had a buddy who went to UCLA and we stopped in there a few times. I remember it being packed late nights with UCLA students. Like someone else said I do not know what happened to that area but it is not what it used to be.

Lot's of good memories at BrewCo.

But yes, as Earlycsquid notes, (and I was just having this discussion with a few fellow alums) Westwood Village has slowly turned from a college area to an extension of the greater Westwood/Brentwood/Bel-Air area. Sucks, but seemed inevitable since the college sits on some of priciest real estate in LA. I knew Westwood was dying when Euro Chow opened up there during my sophomore year. sigh...

I have to admit the BrewCo helped get me in to craft beer, as Arrogant Bastard was the only thing on tap there that seemed worth the $6 price tag (about a decade ago). It was the first Stone beer Id had, and pretty much the only micro Id had outside of Sam Adams.

Wally's Wine is worth dropping into (as far as Westwood bottle shops go) . . . they get RR pretty often, and the occasional Alpine. I've found some surprises at the Bristol Farms in Westwood, too.

I meant The Village. I used to go there for BrewCo, BJ's, the movie theaters, the record stores... but I haven't been there in years now, except for a quick trip to BrewCo to see what was going on there a couple of years back.

Wally's is legit. I have gotten some hard-to-finds from there.
