I'm heading out to Detroit (actually Macomb) this coming saturday for a week and need some advice.

What breweries should I hit around that area? I'm going to try and make a day trip to Founders and Bells but is curious what is around detroit.
What are some good bottle shops and what should definitely pick up that should be available?

    Cheers

Being in macomb you should go to kuhnhenn in warren. I'd also check out one eyed Betty's in Ferndale. If you do make it to bells / founders you should hit up greenbush brewery. Hopefully founders has some class 3 or at least class 2 beers on tap. If they don't I would go to vivant or hopcat instead. Champanes is a great bottle shop down the street from kuhnhenn. Look for whatever seasonal shorts has out and you probably won't go wrong. If you like BBQ you should get to slows in Detroit. 53 taps amazing food and an extensive bourbon list. Roast is a fine dining restaurant in Detroit that also has a good beer selection and amazing food.

Shouldn't there be regional forum "sticky" posts that detail all of the "where should I go while I'm in ______" feedback?

Champanes is the best bottle shop in Macomb County Michigan.

I would make the drive to Royal Oak Michigan, it is about 30 minutes or so from Macomb. Their downtown area has two fantastic bottle shops right down the street form each other. Holiday Market and Cloverleaf are both top notch bottle shops.

There are also 3 Brew Pubs and plenty of shops and restaurants all in an easily walkable area.

You should Hit Kuhnhenns in Warren..Depending where your at in Macomb, Sherwood....If your in or near Clarkston, hit up Union Woodshop and get the Mac n Cheez....If your near Lake Orion hit up 51 North Brewery......If your wanting good sours, do yourself a favor and head to Jolly Pumpkin in Ann Arbor....There is also Grizzly Peak and Arbor Brewing Co. withing a couple of blocks from there (both of those are only OK).........On your way to grand rapids, you could hit Witches Hat in South Lyon.......Depending on how you go to bells or if your going back to macomb after bells and you take I-94 you need to hit Dark Horse...

All of this is Good advice! I personally still would like to hit darkhorse. If you are going to Bell's you will be close. Also Bring some Funkwerks with you! Maybe we could do a trade.

Ive been there once as well and the beer I had at the time was fantastic...Im not saying its complex and out of this world...It was hot out and I had their Tangerine Wheat beer, and I really liked it...Food was good as well...Also, with them being open less than 4 months I expect trial and error as every "new" brewery ive been to has had...JMO

Jolly Pumpkin beers is what you should buy if you are looking for sours. Biere De Mars and La Roja are the best of their selection right now. The brew pub is in Ann Arbor and would be on your way Bells/Founders if you took 94. You will also find 2 good bottle shops (Main Street Party Shoppe & The Beer Depot) and couple other decent brew pubs (Arbor Brewing Company, Blue Tractor, and Grizzly Peak) all within walking distance from Jolly Pumpkin. Ashleys is within walking distance as well and has about 70 beers on tap.

Not many Belgian sours, if that's what your looking for. Since Shelton Bros pulled out of Michigan, we dont' get much. Just Boon, Lindemans, Rodenbach, and maybe a few others. As far as wilds, not many there, either. You're actually catching us in a calm time for BA beers.

If you're coming to Royal Oak, message me. I'm having some friends over for a bbq and typically have a bunch of free food and a free keg of light beer for everybody. But I'll probably be looking for somebody to split some bigger beers with from my cellar.

I can't even chime in because all you Michigan folks named everything. There will be a lot for you to do while you're here, if you make it to Royal Oak/Ferndale (One Eyed Betty's) there is another bottle shop 8 Degree's Plato on Nine Mile.
