What style of BBQ does Slow's do? Keep in mind I'm coming from Texas and I've been to all of the top BBQ spots in Central TX/the hill country, so I have pretty high expectations for brisket/ribs. Just saying that it could be kind of like if I suggest pizza/Italian to a New Yorker coming to see me in Dallas.

I'm just excited about being able to get a good shawarma since that definitely doesn't exist here.

Slow's is classic Lockhart, TX area BBQ. It will not be as good as you have had in TX, but in comparison to many other BBQ joints I've been to around the country, you will not be disappointed. With that said, be prepared for a wait. Luckily they have a solid bourbon and beer selection.

Yep. It's very similar to what they have in Lockhart. Not as good, but still damn fine.

Last time I was at slows to eat there was zero smoke aroma so we asked bartender and his response was due to there popularity they don't smoke all the meat, a lot is braised :slight_frown: too much volume

Holiday Market in Canton, MI has a great selection, and its kind of a hike but I would highly recommend hitting up Cork Town in Detroit and going to the Gaelic League, Slows, or Nemo's.

Bucharest for Chicken Shawarma, they usually have a few good taps (Kuhnhenn, Founders, Odd Side) and stop by Astoria Bakery afterwards for some more caloric goodness.

Grand Trunk is definitely the best of the beer places close to Hart Plaza (it's REALLY close). I honestly haven't been overly impressed with Slows food when I've gone (and you coming from Texas might find it even moreso). The taps are good, and the food isn't bad or anything, I've just never found it to be as great as people claim, not worth the silly wait times. If you can go at an off time and don't have to wait much, then fine.

On the other hand, you'll have a hard time finding a city in the US with better middle eastern food (particularly Lebanese) than you can get in the Detroit area.

I'm pretty sure eating a corndog while at the festival is an official requirement.

For a random lunch on Saturday or Monday, assuming they're open with the holiday weekend, Mike's Famous Ham Place is a place to go if you like ham. You'll have to drive a bit down Michigan for it, but it's definitely cheap. But only if you like ham, since there are only three lunch items, and they all have ham in them.

Glad I stumbled upon this thread. This will be my 2nd time at demf. Cannot wait.

Has no one mentioned Mudgie's?? They make some great sandwiches.

Slows will probably have a booth at the fest too. I know they did last year.

Rub Pub BBQ will also have a decent selection of taps and bottles...Located right by the fox theater

Since there's fest attendees here now, I should ask: what's the selection like within the actual festival ground? It's my first time and most people have suggested going to Grand Trunk to pregame.

Beck's is a sponsor. So your choices will probably be Beck's or Beck's Light. There never really has been much of a selection.

Maybe Blacks good, not Smittys good, and no way Franklins good.

When they start using post oak burning on the floor, I will retract that.

Edit - Slows wins the craft beer category in a landslide. In TX Shiner Bock is as good as you can gat in most Q joints.

Welcome, enjoy the Movement Festival. I want to echo what a few others have said. If you want good bottle shops drive twenty minutes north to Royal Oak. Two of the best bottle shops in town are right on Main Street just a few blocks from each other. Check out Holiday Market and Cloverleaf.

I'm gonna be in Detroit on Saturday to watch the Red Wings game at Park Bar. I still haven't been there, but I've heard good things about it ... and Bucharest's schwarmas.
