I made a typo, it should have said "I don't think ALL people who play gold are pretentious..." I omitted the word all. That's my fault.

Even if I had included it though I am confident you would have taken issue with my comments. As such, here is a more thurough explanation:

I found it ironic that Dools9 didn't want to look pretentious with a tulip glass, yet he was playing golf, a sport that I believe, because of it's roots in elitism, many people play to be perceived a certain way.

You chimed in with a definition of what pretentious is adding that someone's ability to afford a round of golf doesn't make them pretentious. I disagree with that assertation and made a comment "so you know everyon'e motives for playing golf?" as a result of this disagreement. You then said it was I who was perceiving to know everything about golfers, which I never indicated.

    Hopefully this clears everything up.

The last time for me was a couple weeks ago at a local dive bar. As others have said, if the social situation warrants drinking out of the bottle, I have no problem with that. If there is a glass available, I will be drinking out of a glass. At this point it is extremely routine. It almost feels weird to be drinking a good beer out of a bottle. And let's be honest, the aromatics increase tenfold when poured from a bottle. That being said, I enjoy drinking good beer from a bottle like many other stated. That doesn't mean that the beer isn't better out of a glass... It probably is better out of a glass.

I pay someone to pour the beer into my mouth. As of today, I'm still relieving myself of said beer, upon my own abilities. That could always change.

I like drinking from the bottle. I typically enjoy looking at the label art while drinking - and no I don't attempt to pull the label off the bottle. Last night I had a Smuttynose IPA from the bottle, with food, and it tasted better than the night before, when I had it from a glass, before dinner.

I get where you are coming from, and don't want to get in an arguement but... Golf is incredibly old. It was not started by elitist country clubs in the US, it was around for much longer, and wasn't started as "elitist". Also, probably about 98-99% of golf is played on public courses, not private clubs. I caddie at a country club as a summer job (but am not a member), and even of the small percentage of golfers who do play at private clubs, I can confidently say that none or almost none do it for prestige or to be elite (now as for the cars in the parking lot, that may be a different story). Golf is too (to some people) boring, and way too difficult and frustrating to do for the sole purpose of making yourself look elite.

Like I said, I get where you are coming from, and I don't know your backgroun knowledge on golf, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

As far as the OP's question, I drink beer out of a bottle whenever I am out of the house and a glass isn't offered (like others have said, usually in these situations the beer isn't spectacular enough to make a fuss out of getting a glass). Also when playing golf, but I typically bring cans because they are lighter to carry.

I'll have a beer from the bottle if it's not too special and I'm feeling lazy. The other day I had a Zombie Dust from the bottle because I didn't feel like going to the cabinet to get a glass. Definitely lose some of the nuances, but oh well.

I don't play much golf any more - horrible shop accident almost took off two fingers. But, I did play a lot of golf... not to be perceived a certain way. I played because it's fun as hell.

I feel sorry for anyone that does anything to be perceived a certain way.

So tell me... why do you play drums? Becuase it's fun? To pick up chicks (I hope not, cuz guitarists get all the hot ones)... or to be perceived a certain way.
