Alright then. I'll setup an online conversation where we can all exchange #'s at will, or use it to keep in touch during beer releases. Any houston BA's that want to be added, let me know and I'll add you. (I figure if you "liked" that original post I made, it's a safe bet you want to be added)

Not completely new to Houston, but new to participating on here. I'd like to get to know more BAs and not just contribute the few times I am lucky enough to get a scoop on a release

The lurker paranoia around here is kind of crazy IMO. I'm sure there are some, but not so sure it's the huge hoard of lurkers people seem to be so worried about. People have other means outside of BA to find out where they can get the good stuff (facebook, twitter, word of mouth from a buddy/store rep, etc). I think this lurker thing is turning a (mostly) nice, open discussion into an underground 'don't tell anyone because I need my 8 bottles of this beer!' mentality. Meanwhile we all joke around talking about 'Chowing' a case, which is essentially hoarding the shit out of it (and isn't that what we disdain so much about lurkers?) Not trying to say Chow or anyone else is wrong to do what they do, just saying I'm watching this boogeyman complex creep up and it's kind of weird.

eh. im one of those 'lurkers' and decided to make an acct to start posting/sharing my love for craft beer.

and being a 'lurker' i can tell you...we have established relationships/goto spots just like anyone else.

i traded outside of this site with other 'lurkers' who live on the coasts.

i've made plenty of friends through the love of craft beer outside of this board.

if anything, sir clonies and others (including myself) are just building (or expanding) a friend circle to help each other out.

i see nothing wrong with that....heck, i've been doing that outside this board years ago.

I don't know what area of Texas you're from but I know there's more "lurkers" than actual posters in the DFW area. I didn't believe it until meeting people at our craft and growler bottle share back in Feb. "So what's your screenname on BA?" ... "Oh well you know I just read, I don't really post." Which is fine for some things but really annoying with others, like crashing an eff'ing bottle share. If it's like that here I'd bet it's that way in other areas.

No shit. I would be far more concerned about hoarders. The people posting claims of lurkers are the same ones who brag about buying up 8-9 bottles of a limited release like Parabola.

What about posting on a message board makes someone with a screen name more entitled to purchasing bottles or participating in a bottle share? The majority of the posts in this Southwest forum are useless anyhow.

I understand what you're saying and you're probably right in some cases. We had a bottle share that was specifically for DFW BA's, 15 people signed up 45ish showed. The venue was ready for 30ish max, so this a case where it is wrong.

I also have a slight issue with people that dont contribute to a "community". I used to post everything I possibly could, tired being helpful to people who "tipped" me off to things... Now anytime I do there's a mass raid from a whole bunch of people who "lurk" and don't contribute. It's fucking welfare for those who just as able as I to do some work.

I can see where you're coming from here, I for one certainly wouldn't show up to a bottle share unannounced, or even if I did I would bring something to show for it. Sharing info is good and I do what I can to help - in fact I for one could probably do more tbh, and I'm always appreciative of some of the tips and other favors from standup BA's. It's a good community for the most part, but it seems like the lurker hysteria is a bit overblown - I don't know that I had seen that term here before a recent release (KBS maybe?) and now it comes up frequently. I'm in Austin btw, and IDK if there's a huge lurker demographic shift between Austin/DFW/Houston/SA. Perhaps the lurkers could shed some light? (I kid, of course).

Now now, let's not start a witch hunt. Example: Ananke Day share. This was posted about by Freetail even (Twitter), so there were people who were not on BA. I met plenty of people who said they use BA but I didn't recognize their usernames as they don't really post. End result: still a great fucking event. There was plenty of beer for all. Now that's advocacy.

Ya no doubt, Freetail was great! That was their event though and not a BA specific deal.

I had no intention of killing this thread, sorry.

This is actually a good example. There are always people who show up at these kinds of tastings (happens at the JK ones too), who are on BA but don't post much, but they bring great beers with them, they hang out and talk, etc, and they're a big asset to the event.

But I've also noticed a number of people who show up, bring nothing, and stay huddled in their own little groups, talking to no one else but drinking other people's beer. No idea if they're lurkers, or people who hear about it via Twitter/Fb, or people who just show up, but I dont appreciate it.

In general, you'll eventually find people who will hook you up. If I see something up here in the RR area, I always text/email the guys I know up here first before I post, to give them a fighting chance.
