Balance is key. No matter what style. Everything in equal parts to make all parts as a whole, a perfect beer. More flavor up front & complexity doesn't always = better beer OMHO. Subjective. I'm over hop bombs for the sake of hop bombs haviing more flavor up front and hoppiness = best DIPAs and Sours being more puckeringly sour than others = better sour.

Give me balanced equal parts as a whole all day, everyday. Admittedly, in my 20's and discovering new everything, I would not gave agreed with my "these days" self.

DIPAs balanced with malt?? What am I missing here?
While a few of them are on the verge of perfection in my eyes, DIPAs tend to be much more bitter than your standard IPA.. Lately, I've been leaning more toward the step away from the extreme (pale ales) rather than the step further into the extreme (DIPAs)

I can't be the only person with this point of view.

I like o drink IPAs and DIPAs often.. Lagunitas IPA maximus and Stone Ruination I could drink anytime. My go to beer if no IPA is around is all kinds of pale ales .. ( alaskan, SN, My Home brew, Widmer ect.. ) I am currently trying to find the happiest medium between the two with home brewing.. Just playing with diffrernt hops and grains to land it just right... I have been close but not perfect yet.

Case in point - drinking my first Sixpoint Resin. Really disappointed. Tastes is mainly bitterness, pine, and alcohol. Meh.

But Headhunter...holy shit that is the nectar of the gods

Head Hunter might be my favorite ipa right now, but Resin (totally different experience) is still fantastic in my opinion.. I have specific cravings on a regular basis and how much I enjoy a beer is greatly affected by that.. I almost despise a beer (that I may typically love) when it's not what I'm in the mood for. I go through phases...

Maybe I should just avoid IPAs with certain hops? I should know these things as a homebrewer (but only have 3 batches under my belt) but I don't.

Not necessarily certain hops because there's more to it than that.. Hop additions a certain points in the boil will change the way you're gonna experience them. It sounds like you just like your ipas a specific way and you should seek out stuff that people review on the somewhat sweeter side of citrusy..
There's tons of info on hops all over the web and its definitely something you should look into as a homebrewer. You'll be very satisfied with your work after doing more research.

IPAs come and go but I will always love the Stone offering. Deceptively simple, outstandingly delicious.

I find IPA's boring and virtually never drink one.

Truly, you are a unique and precious *********. I feel honored for having read your opinion on this style of beer.

You also seem to be living in the Netherlands and have not reviewed (or had) a single IPA in your beer list. Maybe you should, I dunno, try a couple of the better reviewed ones before writing off the entire style? Nahhh, that's probably too crazy. Why do that when you can make sweeping generalizations?

IPA's gave me a headache at first (FFF Alpha King), didn't appreciate the IBU's at the time. Then one day, after a smoke sesh, my guy hands me a hoptimum, and was like, "dude, you gotta try this. I know you don't like IPA's but this.. This beer. Oh man, just drink it already" and then it wrecked my palate. I wanted more hops, as I didn't know 100IBU's actually gets almost sweet at some point. After wrecking the palate, I stopped drinking for awhile until one day I started craving stouts. Chocolate and chili variety. Then I wanted to try all stouts that championed dark fruits and chocolate. (Abraxas, Black Note, BCS, Dark Lord my 5/5's) and then, to switch it up, I came to appreciate less intense IPA's and totally enjoyed Zombie Dust, Dreadnaught, Alchemy Hour, Hopslam and started searching for complexity and finish. (Alchemy Hour is my 5/5). Now I'm a jumble of APA, IPA, DIPA, Stouts, Sours.. totally depends on what your tastes crave at the time.. now you just know what to grab..

IPA's will always be the go to for sessions.

Like me he finds IPAs less interesting than other beers. To each his own.

Gotta try and find beers with Mosaic and Belma, man, these hops are just so staggeringly tasty. Also, beers that use Bravo as late addition are amazing too.

I too am a Citra and Galaxy man, also love Nelson, but there is nothing like a dry hop using Amarillo and Citra together.

Haha, you just dissed Ron Pattinson.

Maybe I can bm to you Paul Stamets email address and you can complain about his lack of wild mushrooms knowledge, or Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and you can lecture him about Astronomy.

There's nothing like good posts, and yours certainly are nothing like good posts.

    I quite like this IPA:

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/18371/88216

But that's not really in the modern style.

Pliny the Elder is OK, but I wouldn't want to drink 5 pints of it.

IPA's are an introductory level Lambic. That is all. I moved on from them a couple of years ago and enjoy the occassional one every now and then.

I go through phases between and within styles. Within the IPA style I have gone back and fourth between which ones I like over and over now. Ive had cravings for balanced IPA's (stille drink Goose Island IPA from time to time), cravings for hop bombs, extreme cravings for the citrusy varieties, cravings for the lighter/ borderline IPA's, cravings for an earthy hop flavor etc.
