Agreed. At its core, it is a popularity contest. We all remember our high school days, the people voted "most/best ____" weren't necessarily the "most/best ____" -- they just got the most votes.

So you're saying Merry Monks isn't necessarily the best Belgian Style Ale from the Philly area? :grinning:

:grinning: Now that's a good time!

I have to hand it to Philly Beer Scene mag. I think Matt does a great job with this and sources good and interesting content, often on par or better than the redundant preaching to the choir stuff I read from some of the regulars in the BA mag. Oh and it's free.

I'll be in town in two weeks for Beer Week; where can I get this magazine?

It's usually not that tough to find. Many of the better beer bars in the city will have a stack of em for the public near the door. I think one of my more recent ones from a few months ago came from POPE (Pub on Passyunk East).

Unfortunately, I'll be in town for one night - in Center City - and must restrict my boundaries to that area, so venturing down Passyunk ain't gonna happen. Probable venues will include Nodding Head, Eulogy (Yes, Old City), Khyber Pass, Jose Pistola, and the recently opened Strangelove. (Also gonna try the new German place called ?)

Probably because Sam Calagione bought supplies from Home Sweet Homebrew.

I don't remember if O.P. Yum! was nominated but the nominations come from breweries, wholesellers, bars and media. (http://www.phillybeerscene.com/2013/04/looking-deeper-into-the-best-of-awards/) Then from that it's all a popularity contest. I'd like to see them scale back on the internet voting in the future and maybe include some awards based on tasting. I mean every issue has them tasting beers and giving ratings. Perhaps that could be used for something?

I find it hard to believe a place that allows smoking could be the best craft beer bar. Smoke fundamentally alters the way you smell and taste a beer. If I owned a brewery I wouldn't even want my beers to be sent there.

I used to be a regular at the Hulmeville for a number of years, but it reached a point for me that the smoke was just too much to stand. Even if you went in on a night where the smoke was minimal, you'd still come home smelling like an ashtray. It's a shame too, because other than the smoking, it's a cool joint where I've had some epic nights out at.
