anyone else get the staff email that some of the staff dark apparition nuts bottles had gone bad/infected and they were offering newly canned shelf beer in exchange on the honor system? i think its awesome they are doing this for their loyal fans. however, i just opened a staff bottle of bourbon kopi dark apparition, and it tastes sour and very possibly infected as well. i am wondering if anyone else has opened their staff bottles, particularly the stouts, and if anyone has comments/feedback regarding what they thought of the taste.

Have you let Brad know yet?

I cracked a bottle of DA Nuts last weekend and something was definitely off. Sour and kind of salty and nothing like the nutty goodness it was back in December.

    Again, did you tell Brad?

I mean really, shouldn't the first thing be to bring up a possible issue with the brewery first, before asking others?

I don't see the issue in bringing it up on BA. What beer issue ISN'T brought up on BA? Besides I wanted to confirm my suspicion with others. This is the best way to do it. Also as I said I received the email from them offering shelf beer cans in exchange for infected DA nuts so they are already at least partially aware.

Okay, but still, did you email him with YOUR findings? And correct me if I'm wrong, but the email was about Nuts, not your Kopi DA, correct? So why are you bringing up a different beer, if you haven't made him aware of the problem?

    Jeez.

Keffa, stop making an issue out of a total non issue. Your being ridiculous. Why are you creating rules and procedure out of thin air. We know you are hyper defensive over Jackie os and brad, I respect this and guess what I'm a Jackie os fan too, but come on, give it a rest

He brought up the other beer because it relates to the title of the thread.

Also tasted an infected Oil Of Aphrodite Rum Barrel.

Are they infected or just falling apart? I love their beers fresh, but I don't think they hold up particularly well over time (outside of some of their sours).

    infected, as in wild yeast/sourness.

I had a rum barrel oil about a month and half ago and it was good then. Had a bourbon barrel da about three weeks ago and it was a sour infected mess.

Gotcha. I have had some Oil and Rum Oil bottles taste metallic and overall not great after some time in the cellar. They were not infected, to the best of my knowledge, which is why I was asking. I know there are others that have had issues: Bourbon Berry Grove (massively overcarbed), Sweet Chocolate Love (infected), etc.

I do think as a rule that Jackie O's brews, outside of their sours, should be drank relatively fresh.

Unfortunately the reality is ALL STAFF stouts I've had are sour and infected. Allow me to apologize to keffa for posting this on b a instead of reaching out to the brewery. I'm
Assuming brad and the brewery are busy brewing, ok keffa?

If you email or call Jackie O's, they respond fairly quickly.

But that's just not my style. Call or email and complain? Nah.

Understood, but if you are a customer then you have a right to do so. I love the JO's folks and their releases, but there are some issues that they need to address with their bottles. I also believe that they would want to know of those issues, so that they can improve their production steps and to be sure that they are making customers happy. That is my approach and belief, but as you said it may be a difference of styles. Hope to see you there sometime down the road!

Way to resort to being an asshole about it. Let's be realistic here, which will get results quicker? Calling/emailing the brewery to let them know what is going on, or just post on a forum about a beer you had that's got a possible infection without letting the brewery know about it? If you can't understand why I said what I did, then by all means, stay in your realm of delusion. That's fine by me.

FWIW, a DA Nuts last month and a Rum Oil this weekend were both fine. But if there's a good reason to drink JOs stouts sooner rather than later I can handle that.

I've had a few Jackie O stouts show up at tastings and they've been infected. Two of three or three of four, can't remember. I think they were Rum Oil of Aphrodite (twice?) and one of the Dark Apparition variants.

In any case it was enough to never ISO any of their beer. I'd be pissed if I actually bought the rarer bottle release stuff and was offered shelf cans in return. I feel like people have been talking about this issue for over a year, so lets hope they get it figured out soon.
