So I was looking back at my written tasting notes from when I had some of the recent release of regular Abraxas: "Imperial Stout brewed with Ancho Chiles, Cacao Nibs, Vanilla Beans & Cinnamon Sticks." And it reads like I was having sex instead of drinking beer. So my question for you fine fellas is: what are some of the other stouts out there (not necessarily the Imperial level) that combine that delicious chili peppers + cacao nibs + vanilla bean + cinnamon combination?

Right now I can think of two off the top of my head:
1- CCB Hunahpu: "An Imperial Stout Aged On Cacao Nibs, Madagascar Vanilla Beans, Ancho Chilis, Pasilla Chilis and Cinnamon"
2- Pipeworks End of Days: "We’ve aged this milk stout with cacao nibs, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, and ancho chilies"

What other beers brewed with similar ingredients that I'm unaware of that I need to be ISO?

Widmer Bros Reserve South by Northwest, uses "rich Mexican Chocolate Nibs, cinnamon, toasted pecans, and green chillies"... reminded me of Abraxas at first taste.

Thanks guys- going to be hard to get some Mexican Cake I think, but definitely will check out Chocolate Sombrero and the South by Northwest if I see them on the shelves

I thought you were going for some abstract concept comparing beers to the awful Jesse Ventura movie. That said... somebody brewed a beer and named it after the awful Jesse Ventura movie?

While there's a few beers that utilize similar ingredients, I think you might find you've already topped out with Hunahpu's and Abraxas. I haven't tried Mexican Cake yet so I can't speak to that one.

Not exactly the same but Freetail Realtail 2012 is crafted to resemble Mexican mole, "Raisins, whole spices (cinnamon, cumin), piloncillo sugar, dried chiles (guajillo, arbol, ancho), roasted almonds and pumpkin seeds all combine with deep chocolate overtones..."

Clown Shoes does a BBA version of Chocolate Sombrero, which they call Luchador en Fuego. I haven't tried it yet, but have heard good things.

And Mexican Cake is a lovely treat.

Call me a homer, but most if not all of these seem to be copycats of Hunahpu, and none seem to measure up. Abraxas is kind of close when fresh (not talking about BA Abraxas, that beer is legit). The rest... nah.

Don't get me wrong, Mexican Cake is great, just not for the same reasons. Just a really nice chocolatey cakey treat. But I'm definitely trading for some.

The non-local reviews (hell, even some of the locals) don't make this sound especially inspiring.

None of the reviewers, local or not, have the same taste buds and synapses that your brain has, so you really can't tell if you like something unless you've had it yourself

The first batch wasn't good. But the newer ones are quite nice. They refined the recipe. I'm not saying it's as good as abraxas, but it def has a kick at the back end if that's what you are looking for.

Homer.. I preferred Abraxas, and neither are local to me, so do I win? Haha, probably not.. Just different preferences. Both are great beers though!

Can't help but notice that your Abraxas review was posted shortly after my post in this thread. At any rate, part of my point was that you'll notice that lots of Huna reviews from the southeast are higher and lots of Abraxas reviews from the midwest are higher.
Good lord, no. I couldn't finish the bottle of Cocoa Mole I had. Definitely not very similar to Huna/Abraxas.

Abraxas was still fresh on my mind because I had it the night before, and I also didn't even open this thread until a couple hours later. It was just coincidence that an Abraxas thread popped after I reviewed the beer.. Regardless, I was just giving my opinion on the matter. I had to trade for both of them and they are both the only beer I've had from each brewery. I'm not saying that you're biased because of your location (i was kidding,) what's actually more likely is that you've had Huna a lot more than Abraxas, and you've become accustomed to the way it tastes, so it's your preference. Same goes for the folks in the midwest. I could still be totally wrong, but I'm not trying to pass any information off as fact, just throwing my thoughts out there.
